Niger border crossing
Can anyone please advise me on the latest border crossing situation between Libya and Niger?
We (2 Land Rovers, 4 humans and 2 dogs) are leaving on a 4 month trip (starting Nov 05) Tunisia-Libya-Niger-Algeria-Niger-Mali-Mauritania-Western Sahara-Morocco. Most visas and guides have been arranged including Algeria and Niger however our guides in Libya are hesitant to take us down to the Al Katrun border. Also anyone interested in meeting on route to share costs of guides? Full itinerary available. ------------------ JB |
Sounds like a great route - you are going from Chirfa to Djanet I take it, then back out via In Guezzam.
I believe that in Libya all your guides have to do it deliver you to El Gatrun from where you check out and carry on alone or in convoy to Tumu where you do some more checking out and enter Niger. They probably don't like it as it's a bit unorthodox and they are left with an unpaid drive back from Gatrun. FYI, the route is here: http://www.sahara-overland.com/typos/Niger.p601.pdf (did not make edn II). Ch |
Cheers Chris.
I have contacted the Libyan embassy and they have confirmed the border is still open southwards. Like you say it's probably just the agency being difficult. We will be crossing into Algeria via the In Guezzam border post as we would like to drive the route through the Tenere region in Niger and save on doubling back. For everyones interest the quote for our 16 day trip into Algeria (guide in his vehicle - not negotiable) is just shy of 3000 Euro. Of note, seems to be very few people doing the route we have chosen ie Sahara East to West |
Hello jfbrewer,
you don't need a guide + 4x4 escort to cross Algeria under all circumstances. Some agencys do transits with a guide only, a simple 8-10 days transit could be less 600 EUR, google or try www.tanezrouft.com Yves [This message has been edited by Yves (edited 30 September 2005).] |
Hi,
We (1TLC, my girlfriend and I)are aiming to do Tunesia-Libya-Niger-Chad-Cameroon from Nov to Feb. We will probably do the crossing from Libya to Niger somewhere early/mid December and would like to hook up with some others for that bit. Are you in the area around that time? Would you be interested in joining up for this stretch? Feel free to send me an email. Thanks! Michiel. |

Hi,
The plan is to cross the border on Sunday 11 December. We will be staying over at the Fort in Al Katrun the night before. By all means feel free to join up if you are around at the time. We will be carrying a sat phone - will drop you an e-mail with the number as well as our route through Tunisia and Libya. On a different note, we will be taking 2 dogs on the trip. Has anyone travelled with pets through North Africa? What can we expect at the borders, towns etc. |
