Nile ferry exists?
Hello!
Has anyone ever heard of a ferry service from Khartoum or anywhere that takes you all the way up the nile to Cairo? I can't afford a carnet for Egypt so I'd like to ship my bike from Ethiopia or Sudan to Italy and then get aboard a boat and relax all the way to Cairo where I'll get a ferry across the mediteranean and meet my bike in Italy. I know that a ferry used to exist but things have probably changed. I'd be very grateful if anyone could give me any info, cheers Jasper |
Haven't heard of a ferry from Khartoum but as another option, try ferry from Suakin - Jeddah, 3 day transit visa through Saudi - they only normally give transit visas, the visas for Jordan and Syria or alternatively think there is a ferry from Israel to Greece. 3 days for Saudi is supposedly fairly straightforward as the roads are excellent and its a signficantly cheaper option than Egypt.

Nice idea but you cannot ferry from Khartoum to Cairo coz of various cataracts and dams.
You may be thinking of the Wadi Halfa ferry which exists (see other posts) and crosses Lake Nasser near the Sud/Egyptian border to Aswan dam or thereabouts. You can get a slow train to Wadi H if you cant face the sandy ride. CS |
Would a possibility be for you to hitch a ride on a boat from either Djibouti, Mitsiwa or Port Sudan?
