nouadhibou to tombouctou.. how long ??????
hi. hopefully pottering down to tombouctou this christmas and we were thinking of getting down to mauritania, then heading southeast to nema, into mali and then tombouctou. does anyone have a vague idea how long the mauritania/mali section may take? we will be exploring and realise everyones time scales are different. the plan is to go to the festival of the dessert and we are trying to work how how much time to allow to get there. oh, we'll be on bikes. (anybody else heading that way?) karl.

Hello,
you can go in 7-10 days. But the east of Nema it is not very safe today. In 2007 i have been there the last time. But at the moment i would not go there. Regards Mike |
Hi,
You should really avoid Nema. An option is to cross to Mali from Ayoun el Atrouss to Nioro. Another option, even further away from Nema, is to cross from Kiffa to Kayes. It is a dirt track but doable. Cheers, JC |
Hi Mavis,
last winter, it took me 10 days (5 days driving 5 day resting) from NDB to TOM (via railwayline, Chiguetti, Ain Cafra, Tidjikja, Tichit, Oualata, Nema, Nara and Sokolo). From Oualata to the malian border near Nara i was escorted by police (gendarmerie de Oualata).
