refitting tubeless tyres
As our trans african trip start in just a few days, we have had a rather indepth couse in tyre repair at Norways largest tyre supplier. When it came to reseating the bead on our tubeless Michelin XZY, we tried the "lighter fluid" method as mentioned in Chris' book. It worked so well, that the guys working at Vianor, the tyre company, seriously began talking about putting it to use in the field for themselves.
It was increadably simple, with a quick spray, a buring piece of paper on a stick and a bang that sounded like a small nuclear device going off, the tyre was seated and everyone was happy. Thank you again Chris for all the info in Sahara Overland that has helped us prepare for our trip. Erik D. www.dunia.no ------------------ |
Well, it works, but if you want to avoid any unnecessary risk out in the nowhere, then the "bicyle tube" method is worth trying.
Images of how to do it at: http://www.sahara-info.ch/forum3/veh...sts/2035.shtml (Sorry, text is still in german) Bye, Yves |
We tried the bike tube method, but it didn't work nearly as well. Maybe because the XZY have rather stiff side walls? As long as you don't stand in a dangerous position, I don't think the lighter fluid method is too dangerous. Just don't use to much fluid...

Hi Eric,
may be, the tyre was relatively narrow for the rim or the distance between the beads. Bye, Yves |
