Safety Mauretania
Hello.
Me and a friend are Planning on crossing Mauretania form Westren Sahara directly into Mali mid Sept (2 wheel drive Car). Has anyone been through lately? What is the situation? - Is the road paved and visible? - Are border crossings ok? - Is a convoi advisable? - Is a guid advisable? - has the 'coupe d'etat' changed anything so far? All tips are most appreciated. regards. |
Hey Obiahman.
I did that route in December '07. So I cant realy comment on the current situation. But... 1. Apart from nomansland at the border between WesternSahara/Morocco and Mauritania (a two-three kilometer stretch with NO roads. Just sand and rocky tracks. Stay on the tracks because of mines!), there is pretty good tar road all the way. You may encounter a detour or two, but those detours will usually be good enough for a regular two wheel drive to drive on. Mali's main roads are pretty good tar also. So apart from no mans land Morocco-Mauri the drive should cause you no problems. The rest of your questions require recent knowledge about the coup, which I unfortunately don't have. But I am sure someone else here has. Best regards Torsten |
Hi,
Assuming you're refering to the "regular" route through Fort Guerguerat - Nouak - Mali (and not directly from the eastern border to Timbouctou or TAoudeni): Quote:

Thank you McThor and NCR for your reply.
yes, Indeed. Through Mauriania. Planning on doing NouaKchott - Kiffa - Áyoun- Nioro- Bamako (judging from Michelin 741 (2007)). All Other suggestions welcome offcourse. Departing 6 Sept. I guess We'll find out the hard way to see if the coup has any implications on such a crossing. I'll keep news posted here. Otherwise, planning on putting highlights on my blog.
