Sand Tyres for Discovery
I'm travelling in the Libyan sands.
Who can recommend a good sand tyres (like Michelin XS)? Got to fit the standard Discovery, eg 700x16. PS I started this topic under "Discovery Roof Racks" but the sand tyre correspondence has grown. (Also I've got a roof-rack now, too!) Kitmax |
Tyres have got a lot better since the XS came out 30 years ago and I am happy not to use them anymore - go for a normal AT pattern (like BFG) - you may not believe me but they work just fine at 1 bar in the dunes, are quieter and behave normally in the wet - plus of course they come in Discovery sizes and tubeless - another good idea - see:

Thanks for your invaluable sand tyre advice -Still confused on tyres-and-tube choices.
My Land Rover Discovery handbook tells me I can't use tubes with tubeless wheels? I thought all wheels were wheels? kitmax |
Tubeless rims have a ridge or lip to located the mounted tyre (oys what make taking them off so hard) - when tubes are fitted this can rub on the lip - theoretically - and cause punctures.
But using tubes on a very damaged tubeless tyre is an approved get-you-home measure (but one you wont find in the makers manuals. So you may have to change to tubeless rims - a good idea even for the desert, IMHO Chris S |
Theoretically, that's correct. Practically, although Discovery steel rims are designed for tubeless tyres,I've been driving on them with inner tubes fitted for over three years and never had a problem. I suppose the inner surface of the tyre has a greater effect on the condition of the tubes. I'm now changing to Wolf rims and hope they are going to be just as good, only stronger.
