Schools in the Sahara
I'm just casting about for some info. Are there any government schools in the Sahara? What are they like? Do they attempt to reconcile cirriculum and a more pastoral lifestyle? Any info. or suggestions where I can find info. would be appreciated. Info. on the Sahel would also be great. As you can probably guess, I teach. Thanks.

The Sahara covers several different countries, each with their own political/social structures that are somewhat different.
I know of a volunteer organization that helps to fund schools for nomadic children in Niger. Try http://www.turtlewill.org . In that country, nomads are poor and disenfranchised populations and the government does not go too far out of it's way to provide schooling unless someone else starts the process. |
Thanks for the link. I know I've asked a very broad question, covering a huge region. I guess I'm still looking for my questions. I know, however, I'm interested in knowing more about how the gulf between the pastoralist and urbanist is dealt with in terms of access to education and what kinds of modifications, if any, are made to people still living in remote regions. Again, any info. or suggestions are appreciated.
