Security in Niger (Agadez)
 

Travel in Niger, particularly north and east of Agadez was difficult/impossible due to the Tuareg rebellion 12 - 24 months ago. I have not heard of particular troubles in this area over the last year or so. (No news is sometimes good news) Has the situation quietened down? -Or are there still strict travel restrictions?

Are police escorts still required for travel (for example from Agadez to Arlit) ? Is it possible to travel from Agadez to Dirkou and Bilma? Is Iferouane still a no-go zone?

Any general information about the current travel situation in Niger would be much appreciated. Thankyou.

An Austrian woman who lives in Agadez told me: No more Military convoy between Niamey to Agadez, 4 hostages released, peace negotiations between rebels and Government under way. Other hostages remain in captivity, (2 I think), to be released when negotiations go possitively, Went to Gao without problems, but with bad feelings. This is where the Canadian UN Diplomats where abducted in December. You never know when a rivalling fraction strikes, that is just not pleased (bribed enough) with outcome of negotiations (seat in government, or money). So move quickly as spies are ebverywhere.

Thankyou for the information. It still sounds very much touch and go, with considerable risk in the country. I will keep my ears to the ground, and hope that the situation improves. Alistair.

I have been tourist number 9 crossing the Niger Malian border this year. Not many crossing overland... Rgds
