Selling a car in mauritania?
 

Hi, does anyone have any current information on whether or not it is possible to bring car (or motorcycle) into mauritania, and sell it, leaving the country without it?

I don't see any reason why not. Our car was not stamped into our passport.

So, if you have contact with a buyer you are good to go. A place we noticed that had car buyers about was Auberge Sahara in Nouakchott. On the left as you drive in immediately after the roundabout with the statue of dolphins in the middle.

Tonka. I think things may have changed. My Land Rover was stamped into my passport in January.

that´s not new at all.
they usualy stamp the vehicle into the passport.
i crossed since 1999 several times per year, always got the vehiclestamp/ handwriting into my passport.

selling a car in mauretania always used to be tricky, many people lost all, or even got bigger problems than losing money only.

I wonder if this is something new (or even vehicle dependent)?

I have crossed the border into Mauritania 8 times with a truck, and twice with a car, and they've always stamped the CDP - they've never written the vehicle details into my passport.

nothing new, but:
i never used the cdp, i always took the laissez passer, thats why they wrote it into my passport.

if u use the cdp than of course they do not need to write it into your passport but you can not sell it legaly without paying the importtax.

I took a TIP from there in January this year and they didn't stamp my passport.. mind you they used to stamp it in Mali, but don't now. All very odd.. still stick with the others advice to be safe.

I've heard of people leaving Morocco and selling their vehicles in no mans land before they enter Mauritania.

Yes, but your stuck and the buyer knows that..hence low price will be offered.

Better to sell in Mali..i saw plenty of buyers and sellers when i was there.

Merc sprinter 4-6000 euros
Merc 190D 3-4000 euros
4x4 3-6000 euros
Merc ML 5-6000euros

Higher end cars are legally registered... cheaper ones are just cloned to avoid the fees...thats all done by the buyer.

You will have to deal with a fixer/go between..just make sure his cut comes from the buyer.

They will stamp the car into your passport in Maurtania if you dont have a carnet.
You can sell your car in no mans land but the price will be very low.
Mauretania has reinstated the law that does not allow cars older then eight years to be imported. That means that interest and price will be lower.
Trucks are easier to sell in Nouakchott, no eight year rule.
Buyer will have to make your passeport stamp disappear somehow, which may still give you problems when you leave the country.
Forget about Senegal but some sell in Gambia.
Mali is the easiest country to sell in. And Burkina.

Actually yes. They are now even interested in gasoline cars after they started converting them to LPG in Ouagadougou. :)

Thanks everyone for the replys! I think we're gonna go the Mali route, i'll be excited to see what happens as i've heard varying reports as to whether the car is stamped in or not. But i still think Mali is the best bet...
