Shipping out of Port Sudan
 

Hi all,

Currently in Ethiopia heading north and looking for possibilities to get our vehicle back to Europe. As we have only 5 weeks left (unfortunately, expected to be back at the office at 3rd March ;-), we are looking for a quick solution.

Will try to get a transit visa for Saudi Arabia to reach Israel but not sure if this will work out in Khartoum. If not, we thought shipping out of Port Sudan by container/RoRo to any port in Western Europe should always be an option, but so far I can't find any info/freightforwarders for this. Anyone with more info?

And, anyone experience with shipping from Israel to Western Europe? (so not to Greece/Italy/Turkey)

If all plans fail, anyone who can tell us about possibilities to sell the car in Sudan? :)

Note: You may need to get a permit to go to the coast (Port Sudan/Sarakin etc). If from the Ethiopia border you want to go straight there, you can get it in Kassala.

Erkowit is a not stop over on the way - cool at 1,000 metres and old British ruins.

Windleys, surprising we didn't meet yet ;-) We are currently in Addis, waiting for some repairs to be done on our car (suffered from Marsabit-Moyale) Then Lalibela - Gonder (+Tim/Kim) - Simien - border Sudan (around 6 Feb)

The Grimaldi ships that you get from Israel dock first in Italy but then go on down the Spanish Coast and ultimately on round to Ireland and the UK. However the longer voyages become very expensive. Full details are on the Grimaldi Freighter Cruises section of their site. Ashdod to Salerno was approx 1000 euro for us and a 4x4. All the details are posted (somewhere!) on here. I will try and find later. Or send me your email and I will forward to you. Friends of ours looked into shipping from Port Sudan to Turkey but it was very expensive (about £3000 from memory) because of the huge fees to go through Suez.

The hub for the region of the Danish shipping giant MAERSK is in Salalah, Oman! So shipping out of Sudan to Oman and heading towards Europe through Iran might be an interesting alternative, avoiding Saudi and the transit visa problem and also avoiding the Suez Canal and its prohibitive fees.

Btw, strangely enough we just received an email of a shipping company in the netherlands and they told us our country does not accept freights from Sudan?? Any comments on this...?

Might be UN (read: USA) Sanctions related. Nobody will receive a courier package from Somaliland, but you could DHL in ;-)

That's what I'd guess as well, sanctions-related... :nono:
Anyway, will try to go for the Port Sudan - Jeddah - Aqaba option in Khartoum. Anyone knows how regular the ferry sails?
(additional tips for acquiring the Saudi transit visa are more than welcome!)

at last reliable contact in kharoum for transit visa Saudi
 

We have a good contact for transit visa to Saudi from Sudan.
This contact organises pilgrims to Mecca. He can also organise a ferry booking and transport for right hand vehicles to transit.
You need a Jordan visa first. This is easy the Embassy is near the Saudi Embassy .
Also if married a marriage certificate if you do not have it with you all the Embassys in Khartoum will provide a letter.
You need two free pages in the passprt opposite each other .
He can also organise everything in 4 days depending on the ferry dates .
He seems a very honest straight forward person and others have used him in the past with no problems.
You need negotiate his fee directly with him but he did not seem to ask for much .
The best way is to go to his office just near the Saudi Embassy and organise things.Call him for directions when you reach Khartoum .

Hi Mousse,

Just to make sure: From Port Sudan or better Suakin, there are only ferries to Jeddah! There are no ferries which continue to Aqaba, Jordan.
