Thousands of wooden pinasses clustered round the jetties, like crystals on a string.

Yes these are indeed locals fishing boats. Here is a photo from a couple of years ago:

Seems warming waters have seen fish move northwards towards NBD, the Senegalese came with their boats, due to huge demand from China, then Mauritania banned them, leaving their boats. I read elsewhere that the Chinese were clearing the many shipwrecks from the bay - so they could get in and set up their fish factories. |
