Tunísia/ Líbia/ Algéria (?)
Hi to all
Long time I didn’t post where… I’ve missed the environment! I’m planning on going to Libya in august 2007 (yes… I know that it’s not the best time ) A have some questions to the area experts for my “start up planning” 1- Where is the best place to catch the ferry coming from Portugal? 2- I’ve read some information about Libya and the most interesting zone is probably the southwest zone. (right?) Any recommendations about places to visit? (Fezzan; Akakus mountains; Wadi Mathendous, etc…) 3- Is it possible to enter Algeria from Eastern border? And is it worth it? It is something that I would like to try if it’s worth it when speaking about desert pistes and scenic places… B regards from Portugal Bernardo feio Ligthweight (yes I will be travelling in a land rover lightweight!!) |
Q2. Yes. All those places are great.
Q3. Not possible but well worth visiting Alg Updated routes info and map here: http://www.sahara-overland.com/routes Ch |
Bernado,
I' ve just emailed you some waypoints that show the location of excellent 10,000 year rock carvings, my trip through the dunes and most importantly a water well (north of Alwinet). Also, I've stayed several times at a place on the eastern edge of Alwinet. They are fantastic people and very hospitable. Sorry, I can't answer the rest of your questions, but I know Libya quite well. Enjoy. P.S. The email address on your website didn't work. |

Ok ok :-)
So for some that “only” “knows” the desert from the other side (Marrocos, Mauritania, Mali) what do you recommend? I was planning Libya but Tamanghasset (and the “Abre du Tenere”) are icons for my desert trips. The Abre do Teneré I will have to delay for another time… But Tamanghasset is achievable…. (is it?) Djanet- ghat is closed. In Amenas is also closed? Deb Deb to Ghadames is eventually open but to much at the north… So… should I forget Argelia for this time and concentrate only in Libya? Is a mixed trip in Libya/ Argelia possible or I will have to wait a couple of years? Yes, yes… I’m probably delirious but it’s an exercise that I like to do… (thanks for your present and future comments, and thanks for your waypoints) |
Bernardo,
Due to the current situation, I think concentrating on one country at a time is a logical conclusion. We were planning LY and ALG for this February, but instead decided to go to Libya and explore the South West, but also Murzuq, the centre and North East. Off in two days!!! |
I plan on going Sicily, Tunisia, Algiers, Morocco, Spain starting June 2007. I don't know if I can get a visa since I'm from the US.
Would the people who posted neat things to see please forward them to me? I don't have GPS. I still haven't gotten maps. I hope I can get a job teaching English in Portugal or Cairo. Although Egypt makes it hard to bring in bikes. --Dave |
