Hello, did noone cross this border at Ghardimau? Is it possible without guide? Are there an another gates where I can enter without guide assistance.

Since most of the people want to avoid northern part of Algeria Nefta is the most popular option if you go south - of course in Nefta you need a guide but I would say that for northern border crossings you can manage without hiring one - on the other hand you need someone to send you the invitation letter for getting visa and this is usually someone form the algerian agencies. So I guess you have to deal with them anyhow ...

Hi, Tom. I already got some offers from Algerian agency. But the price for the guide is too much. I was asking them about the invitation only without the tour booking. The answer was NO. They told me I can get in Algeria nowhere without guide. I think they pursue one's own interests. But I would like to know exactly.

The thing is that I never traveled in north Algeria so I don't have any experience in that respect - but I traveled in southern part several time (last time was january 2008) and for south you definitely need the guide but the guide was not required at that time for northern part. I'm sure somebody from the forum will be able to help you out since there are some people who were using ferries from Europe to northern Algeria ports.

I thought about ferry. But land border is easyer for an entering.

Hi Alex,

for an algerian visa you (normally) need an invitation (private, business or from a tour operator), this is the problem , not the border crossing in the north. And (normally) you will get the visa only in your country.
So ask the alg. embassy in MOSCOU, 04 karapivenski Bereoulok 01A, Moscou, Tel. 7095 200 66 42,7095 924 07 14,7095 280 47 74, Fax 7095 924 77 35,7095 923 02 98 what you need for a visa.

In the northern part you dont need a guide, but maybe you have to drive in a police escort (it costs nothing - only time).

Hi, Ferdi. Yes, the invitation is problem if I do not want booking tour. I tried to get visa in Moscow with the help of russian travel agency. Noone can help me if I do not have an invitation from Algeria. Therefore I want to find someone who will help me with invitation.
