Thanks Tomaz, that is what I am looking for, the first hand info. How about getting to the harbour of Tunis? Did you go through the center of Tunis or perhaps on minor road to ferry terminal through Ben Arous?

To and from Tunis port
Hi Jarek,
You can get to Tunis port (La Goulette) without going through the middle of Tunis. Turn off the main road at Ben Arous and head for Rades. After 5km turn left at the roundabout which takes you to the new bridge to join the causeway then it's an easy run into the port. La Goulette is signed all the way. Good luck, Jojo Handy map link |
Thanks Tom. That is roughly what I was expecting. Lets hope the same, or better, exists for the next few weeks. Toby

In fact Tunis center as well as port La Goulete are crowded by military (tanks etc...) - before entering the centre there are military checkpoints where we had to show passports and then additional two on the way to the port - so from my point of view this was the safest part of the trip.
Our GNV ferry to Genoa was canceled and there were no information available from CTN about their schedule. The only way to get reliable information was to go directly to the port and check since most of the offices were closed and nobody answered the phones. So we ended up on ferry to Marseilles (the only alternative was a ferry to Palermo). Tomaz |
Tomaz, that is interesting observation:thumbup1: Driving from Libya, did you take P1 road all the way along the coast or switched to P2 through Kairouan? How was Medenine and Ben Gardane (is there a way to avoid town center?).

In Medenine and Ben Gardane was plenty of smoke in the air from certain part of town so we know which parts of town we have to avoid. We followed the advices from local people and truck drivers where to get of the main road and taking side streets.
We used the road trough Kairouan which is passing mainly trough villages - it turned out to be quite a good decision. Tomaz |
Tunisia
I had a most enjoyable run through Tunisia on 29th/30th Jan. Through the border at Raj Adjer in an hour and up to Hammamet via a route I usually take. Big smiles and waves from Police, Military and locals. Stayed in central Hammamet and took an evening stroll around town. Up to Tunis and coffee in town. The only change was the total lack of posters of Ben Ali! Ferry to Marseille on time and all was tickety boo!
