UK to Dakar and back on £2000 ?
I’m starting to plan a six month ride, leaving in 2 or 3 year time, when I’ve saved the cash. 4 months will be spent going to Mongolia and back. However I’d like to split the trip in two taking 2 months in Africa.
After that come home service the bike, restock and head east to Mongolia. I’m never likely to do the Dakar rally I’m not that crazy. I’m just wondering, is it’s possible to ride from the UK to Dakar and back to the UK on £2000 taking 8 weeks to do ? I’ve just ordered Chris Scots Sahara Overland book so the answer is probably in there :) |
should work...
For longer trips I typically count on 1000€ a month. Traveling faster is more expensive. With all the equipement there, I'd do it for 2000£. You'll have to watch your budget though.

I'm leaving on the 10th March to spend 2 months in Africa, and my budget is a little less than that!!! I have however spent a month doing it on foot and only spent £450... so maybe i'm a little more 'frugal' |
Some detail to be sorted out
It's all a bit vague and depends, in part, if you are staying in the Hilton or that tent, yet to be packed on the back of the bike. :rolleyes2:

The past year I've spent 640euros & 800euros on two separate months each in W.Africa on foot using local transport. On a bike with fuel to pay for but no accomodation if you take a tent I'm sure you'll be fine. Two years ago I had 400euros for a 3 week trip from France down to Nouackhott overland (bus ticket to Granada already paid & flight from Marrakesh home already paid)
2000GBP sounds a lot of money to me, should last a while! Kira |
2 months and £2000, that’s £35 a day, At todays prices I could do it and have some change but I could also spend more. If that’s the budget spend accordingly and you should not have any problems.

thanks for that
Thanks for the replies, looks like I can do that then :) because the trips not for a couple of years I’ll probably have a bit more saved up. I’m hoping to be able to do Mongolia and back to the UK on about £4000.... total for six months on the road about £6000/£7000 not including getting the bike or myself ready.

Yes you can easily do it at 'todays prices' but you are talking about doing it in 2-3 years time??? The way fuel prices are going, that budget might just pay for a tank of fuel, or the 'red' Ken Livingstones of this world may by then have banned all forms of transport... :eek3::eek3::eek3: |
