Used Scooters in Cairo (2-wheeled import ban, 2014)
I read about the 2-wheeled imported vehicle government ban:
'In May 2014, the Egyptian Ministry of Trade and Industry issued a decree banning the importation of motorcycles and three-wheel vehicles, except for tricycles and chassis for trade. The decree bans the importation of CBUs (Completely Built Units) yet allows the importation of SKD (Semi Knocked Down) motorcycle chassis and engines. This ban remains in place today. I see many 2018 and 2017 used scooters for sale (brands like: Kymco, Hawa, & Sym), in Cairo on a couple of websites. Ex: https://egybikers.com/motorcycles.as...&Submit=Search Ex: https://olx.com.eg/en/vehicles/motor...%5Bphotos%5D=1 Ex: https://olx.com.eg/ad/scooter-sym-jo...i-IDa1CgI.html How can this bike be for sale if the ban has been in place since 2014? Sym https://olx.com.eg/ad/sym-symphony-s...n-IDa22Xq.html Excuse my ignorance, but If you can help shed some light on this for me, I'd appreciate it. |
I think you have the answer in your text. They are imported in kit form and an Egyptian company assembles them. It's a simple trade restriction to favour local labour content.
