ALCAN highway + cell phone coverage
I'll be riding to Alaska from Oregon this summer. Does anyone know about cell phone coverage on the road?
Thanks in advance, Cookie KLR650 |
Last year my wife and I took the ferrys from Bellingham,WA to Seward, AK. Then rode back on the Alaska Highway. While we were gone the water line to our house broke. We were able to get it fixed over the cell-phone.
On the coast, the cell-phone will Not work. When you get near a port it will work. Inland at the major towns like Tok, Whitehorse, etc the cell worked fine. I am not sure of in between towns. There is always traffic on that road. I have ATT cell service with a Nokia phone that is analog and digital. I frowarded our hone phone to our cell # I put voice-mail on the cell phone. That way any calls going to our home phone or the cell phone would go to the cell phone voice-mail. This worked well, every day we were talking to friends, plumbers. By the time we got home the new water line was fixed and buried. Have a good time. John |
The ALCAN has a good deal of traffic on it now - the start of June - and will be busier I expect over the next couple of months. So if you have trouble you can always get help from someone passing.
Just come up the ALCAN on a KLR650 (see Yourman on the road!) |
