Buying and selling in different states
Hi. Could anyone advise me on the situation of buying a bike in one state and selling in another - are there restrictions/complications. We are planning to start in Alaska, ride through Canada and West coast America and then across to finish in maybe New Hampshire (rough plan). Trying to decide whether we should ship/fly our 2 bikes or buy and sell there? Thanks

No, you can buy a bike anywhere and sell it anywhere in the USA and sell it anywhere in the USA. No restrictions at all.
The only thing is that some states allow non residents to register vehicles int heir names and some don't. There are lots of threads here about which ones are which. |
As non-residents of the USA you need to spend most of your time thinking about where you're going to buy your bikes. Per #2's post, that'll be key. Do your own research for whatever state you're planning to buy in--e.g., Alaska. Read what the state itself says, not what others say on the internet. Don't forget you'll also need insurance, which can be difficult or impossible for a non-resident to purchase in some states.
Then, when trying to sell, you merely sign over title or registration to a new owner, whose responsibility it is to register his/her new bike. If that new owner is a non-resident, they'll perhaps have some difficulty registering and insuring. That's worth considering carefully, especially if you're going to be in a tremendous hurry. Hope that's helpful. Mark |
Thank you so much this is really helpful - I will investigate!
