i plan on buying a chilian plated bike(in chile),ride to north america, and than sell it.

is it possible to sell the bike to locals in canada/usa?

Sure you can sell it to anyone you like, but in UsA at least, buyer can never register it legally. The VIN will give it away as a non compliant bike ... against federal law.

Canada? Ask Canadians, but I'd guess same answer. HUNDREDS of Hubb travelers have encountered this conundrum. Best bet (IMO) is to sell it off for a CASH deal some where South of the USA border. (Mexico will do other than TVIP issue)

Mechanics and side road dealers may give you Cash for it. Legal? Hell no! But those guys will know how to get the bike registered in their country. Several friends done this with USA bikes they rode down there ... did not want to ride them home, so sold them off cheap. Key word CHEAP. (this before they took a deposit upon entry)

PS: redeem your TVIP deposit BEFORE crossing border (Banjercito office is often within a mile or three of actual crossing) So get your refund document, then go find a nice bike shop to sell the bike off, take Taxi to border, walk across and catch Greyhound bus from there.

Late to the party , but might be useful to others in the same situation t think about this .
Mollydog almost touched the topic.
If a bike is "plated " in Chile or some other country it suggests you are buying second hand . Find out where the bike was first sold when new. A good number of used Canadian and USA bikes get exported either by dealers or by travellers from the north who do not want to ride back.
If it happens to be a used bike that was originally sold in Canada or in the USA it should still bear the Canadian and /or USA stickers on the frame which show that it complies with the Canadian and USA emissions and safety requirements . If the bike was sold new and designed for the South American market it will not have those stickers and it will be unsalable .
With those stickers you would be legal to re-sell it in Canada or the USA.
They would probably be able to do a dmv records search of the VIN and find out exactly when and where it was first sold

Another problem with selling a Chile vehicle outside of chile is the new owner would likely be stopped at the border into Chile even assuming they got that far since a poder would have been needed top get across other borders and that doesn't alway work

Solution: buy a Us or Canadian bike in South America, when your trip is done, you can resell it up there easely.
