to clear up new mexico info

you need a rent receipt with address and amount of rent
you need an insurance certificate with address and your name and vin of moto
you need bill of sale notarised if it's out of state, not if in state
you need clear, signed title
if it is out of state it will have to have vin inspection
yes...you pay 3% excise tax on amount that is written on sales receipt
you can get 2 years plates if you want
you get title, registration and plate in your sweaty hand when done....no waitin'

my bikes registerd 'til May 2014 - figger out how we pulled that one off and I'll buy you a beer.........

Hey Zig, I wont be there till August, but I will be posting here..I hope your still around then .... ..Joel I am prepared to lose a few thousand between buying and reselling after our trip but think I can minimise that by buying instead of renting....I Will be calling a few BMW dealers in the coming weeks to ask a few Questions.. One will be what model can you sell on consignment for me that will move quickly? I Have a GS here and would prefer one over there....BUT...if he says for example.... I have a mint condition k 1200s here and can resell it no worries... I might consider it... I have toured lots of Australia on my old k 1200s 2 up no problem.....I love my GS though..

bikes

A K bike is a good deal in the states...resale is low on them , well that means they are relatively cheap but they will need to sell cheap.
R1200's seem to be rather expensive but a lot of late model ones are for sale.
Not sure what to recommend.

New Mexico

You need only a rent receipt and insurance card - they require 2 forms of address verification...you don't need a bank or utilities statement any more.
Then 2 ID's with foto - drivers license and passport.

Be careful now putting anything in quotations like you need a "rent"

receipt...or especially state something like "back-dating"...

there are some riders who construe that as conspiracy to defraud the

government and take "grave" offense

Ok thanks mate, I will organise the rent reciept { if the guy I have been talking to in New Mexico is ok with it] and insurance card as proof of residence, Photo id is ok too. I was talking to my girlfriend about the trip and as we will be trying to see as much as possible over such a vast area I honestly dont think we will be doing much dirt, So a K bike would do us if the deal was right...How long are you going to be away for zig ?....I am now looking at travellers medical insurance....not much fun but I guess its a must...cheers...Phil

I'll be gone a year or more I think

just make sure you rent receipt is filled out correctly - I've gotten some bad press lately by intimating that one could fake a rent receipt - we don't want that to happen :-)
