Entering the USA with a one way ticket
Hi Guys
We are just about to start our second leg of a RTW trip in the states. Having started our trip in Australia we are currently in Switzerland getting ready to go to the USA. My Question: CAN YOU ENTRE THE US WITH A ONE WAY TICKET?? as we are travelling for about 12 months and then fly back home to OZ from Chilli. We got the bike organised and that seems to be no problem. we also got a 6 month visa for the states. :helpsmilie: Thanks Mark |
Wouldn't risk it. The INS has asked me for return tickets for the last few years. They usually just glance at the e-ticket print out, but quite frankly I wouldn't risk lying to the INS. I generally buy a fully refundable (=expensive) ticket from a reputable airline _directly_ and cancel after I arrive. If that is financially not feasible I'd buy at least the cheapest ticket to Mexico or Canada. Bus ticket may work, but a friend got turned down at check in with just a bus ticket. The airline will have to carry the cost if you get turned around. So, they usually check.

If it is a B2 visa, don't worry about it. Or, fly into Canada and then enter the US. Much easier and much cheaper. Canada will still ask you questions about the onewayness of the trip, but as long as you have a story and docs to show you are on a round the world trip it will be OK. |
Mate,
When those Yanks see your face they'll definitely send you back! ... And keep Barny, hehehe, oh no seriously I hope not. But there is hope if they send you back, you can always join us on the Tour around the Mediterranean Sea! :thumbup1: We'll be very sad to see you go. The count down to the new adventure begins! Safe travels and keep in touch. Cheers, Pascal & Arja |
If you have some documentation to show them you are going to fly out of Chile you might be OK, I just flew a DR650 into Miami from Colombia and myself on a one way ticket, then continued on to Canada and got away with just a few questions.
I didnt realise I had to do an ESTA to get permission to travel to the USA under the Visa Vaiver Program, which created a few more questions, but no problems. If you have Visas you should be good. Suerte ! |
The last few times I needed a one way ticket I found it more expensive than a round trip ticket. So I just buy the round trip ticket and toss the return. Airlines don't like it but as long as they price a round trip ticket cheaper than a one way they deserve it.

We now have arrived in the US.
Forget about travelling with a one way ticket as you wont even get on the plain from where you start your trip. We been ask to show our return ticket in Zurich on the check in and again in Berlin where we only had a transfer. But funny enough nobody wanted to see it at customs in the US. Mark |
