Great Western Trail
I am desparately trying to find info and hopefully maps of the Great Western Trail that goes from Idaho through to Mexico. The official site is still under construction and I can find no other links or info. I am at present in Canada and will be going through the states in about 2 weeks time. I would like to go via the GWT rather than ride tarmac. Any ideas info whatever would be a great help.
Thanks Oz |
The GWT sounds like my kind of ride too and is a long-term plan - more consistently interesting than the E-W Trans-Am trail (p.199), IMHO
I researched it a couple of years ago (see my book p.193 - just a few links) when it seems only bits had been completed, with various 'corridors' for pushbikes, 4x4s, bikes etc. I think each state is doing its own bit which may eventually link up one day but its far from finsihed. in case any others are thinking of this next yr , cycleworld mag ran an article on the Mex-Canada trial , I think someone is selling GPS waypoints on it. this is no small undertaking, be prepared.
on www.advrider.com under regional forums post your request, some ( me for north central wash state) are working on a trail BC-MX as close to the cascade Mt range as possible. lot of scouting to be done. taking a route through eastern washington, eastern oregon, central nevada has plenty of dirt roads, very remote, easier then a trail ride. plan your gas, food, water well, some towns on the map are no more then a ghost town w/ no services. stunning scenery, desert from BC to mexico. this section of the latter 2 states is THE most remote part of the lower 48 US, nice people too. |
I don't know anyting about the great western trail, but I know alot of back roads, many of them dirt on the northern CA coast. You probably don't want to try the cascades this time of year, it could snow a couple of feet real fast and you would be trapped. I have a good knowledge from the Ore border to near the San Frencisco Bay area. There are area's I know more about than others, but I can keep you on alot of dirt and almost all back roads. I would advise carrying spare gas. There are many "towns" that are on the map that are ghost towns. Many of the towns that are ther are only a store, post office and gas station all in one. These spots can and do close down without warning all the time. Others close down in the winter, or the owners just take a few days off without warning. ------------------ John |
Sorry this is so late but... There is a book " Cycling the Great Divide by Michael McCoy" that covers the entire Mexico to Canada trail. The book was designed for mountian bike riders, but the trail and info is the same. Includes some GPS points and maps. I've been thinking of this ride for a year now. Just need to do it I guess. Book is available from Whitehorse Press. Good travels
