Headed to the US within a month where to buy and register a bike"?
Any advice?
Ideally i would like to fly to Florida and get a bike there, just not sure if i can get a Florida plate as a European citizen:scooter: |
i flew into florida in 2013 from australia and purchased an old vfr800 in jacksonville.was able to get insurance from progressive insurance and it was just a matter of going to the county clerks office/dept of licencing to licence it in my name and get the new plate.i used the address of the person i bought the bike from for the paper work.had an international drivers licence with me as well.

Hey Pete, thanks my friend,
I had insurance with progressive as well, when i was traveling on my European bike in Canada, bikers and great people to work with. Will bring my international licence, also looking for something affordable, dl 1000 or some KLR.:palm: |
you don't have to register where you buy a bike. If Florida is where you can get a cheap flight to , go there and buy a bike. You can get a temp plate and ride it wherever you can register it.

You're right Mitch, thanks for the reminder, i forgot about that option, Florida is a better state to fly to, lots of affordable rental cars, not to many hours of flying time from Europe, and enough bikes, any idea for how long the tag can be valid.
Good advice!:Beach: |
30 days. but why would you not want to register in florida? that way, you get it out of the way before starting your ride and not have to worry about it later on. also, it makes getting the title and registration easier, since it was likely titled in florida before, so you will not have to have any physical (VIN) inspections done elsewhere.

This post marks my transition from lurker to poster. I'm coming to the US from the UK in early September to do the TAT. After reading the above and contacting a few Honda dealers near Orlando (I'm going to buy a 250 Rally), I've realised one thing missing is an address in Florida to register the bike. Teevee, could your generosity extend to me? Or can anyone else help? I realise it is a bit of a stretch as I don't even have sufficient reputation to send a PM! Does the DMV actually send documents I'd have to pick up, or is the address just something you put on the form and then little happens with it? Thanks in advance. |
do I need bike driving license to register or not?

I think the requirement for the actual driving license comes in when getting insurance, or obviously if you get stopped by the police. |
