In the end, you'll pay whatever you need to pay to get coverage from whoever's willing to offer it. I've paid over a hundred euros per month when riding in the EU, a hundred US dollars for a quick transit of Mexico, and an astonishing amount (which I've wiped from my memory) for less than a week in French Guiana.

I've also put on a lot of miles without any insurance at all, although that's a controversial topic in its own right. I wouldn't do that in the USA, now that I've got an actual net worth which might be taken from me in a lawsuit.

Hope that's helpful.

Thanks Mark, very useful.

Motorcycle Express offering new Insurance, heres the link:
https://www.motorcycleexpress.com/ab...card-insurance

markharf 2 Feb 2019 20:55

I've never really understood Motorcycle Express services, so I clicked through and started skimming. I stopped at the point where they said that in the USA, insurance is tied to the person, not the vehicle. This is not true in any state I've lived in, and since insurance in one state is valid in all other states (and Canada), I'm assuming it's not true anywhere in the US. Motorcycle express contrasted this to the EU, where insurance runs with the vehicle, not the person.

I have separate polices on one car, two motorbikes, and one trailer. Anyone who drives any of these with my permission (and valid license) is covered by my insurance. I do have to let them know of anyone who resides in my household, but in any case insurance runs with the vehicle.

Caveat emptor, and don't forget to read the fine print.

Mark

TBF, it says "Coming soon", rather than "Available". But at least someone is working on resolving the issue.

Hi

Firstly, please accept my apologies for not being in touch sooner, and for the slightly impersonal nature of this email – I just wanted to get our good news out to as many people as possible as quickly as possible. The good news is that we now have a US motorcycle insurance policy available for you to ride your own motorcycle in the USA again. It is scheduled to go live on 1 March, so please keep an eye on our website

www.hctravel.com

around that date (given the delays we have had so far there is a chance the launch may not be on time so I would suggest you wait until the following week). If you are familiar with the insurance policy we have offered in the past, it will be very similar. Please note that this will be the only policy available anywhere in the World. H-C Travel is the only company that can combine your US motorcycle insurance with travel / medical insurance, and sea- and air-freight, and book your flights and any accommodation you might want.

I’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have, although at the moment I have few details and have not had the opportunity to view or test the website.

As I have stressed before, please do not book any other travel arrangements for your next North American tour until your US motorcycle insurance has been approved.

I look forward to arranging your motorcycle insurance very soon.

PS. Please also remember that we can arrange motorcycle hire across the USA and Canada, and all of our rental motorcycles include insurance options.

I used Dairyland from the UK and its a rip off. Not surprised they pulled out - probably due to cancellations once people looked around. Yes you do need a US address but I used a hotel I was staying at and they received my papaerwork. Insurance went from £300 a month to £35 that way!
I went to an agent for Progressive, and other riders I spoke to did something similar. I have also insured this way in Australia and New Zealand as well as Malaysia.

Was this on a bike you bought in the USA or one that you shipped in?

Hi everyone.

First post here.

I chose my shipper, airline, personal travel insurance and all, but I'm stuck as far as motorcycle insurance is concerned.
Cheryl from Fernet is not keen on giving me a quote since I don't have a us address. I contacted one of my motorcycle's dealerships in Maine and asked him if he could help me. I'm waiting to hear from him.

I will take any help I can. DerStromer, I can see you worked it out with Progressive. Do you have a US address ?

My trip is planned between next june and september, through Montreal and Vancouver, from France.

We found a guy on FB, Alex Smith, who arranged for us a postbox address. This was enough for Fernet. Alex is active in several grouos like pan american travelers etc on FB.

Establish yourself here (just give some details about your life, your travels, where you've been and where you're going). Then describe your trip and state your needs. Chances are pretty good someone will step up and offer you use of an address.

This doesn't work unless people feel they know you--at least a little bit. And it won't work if no one knows whether you're shipping a bike from somewhere, buying locally, where you're planning to enter, and which country. Et cetera.

For example, I live in Washington State. I have no idea in the world whether I could be helpful. There's no point my bothering if you're headed for Canada, or New York, or in fact anyplace but Washington State.

Hope that's helpful.

Mark

Well, I think I could fix a postal box as a last resort, i.e USAbox.com. I'll ask Fernet.

And thank you, Mark.

I already updated my profile, and wondered if I should open a new topic or something. But since this one is one of the most reads... I will try to be as concise as possible here. I can ramble for hours ! I do it on my blog (French). Look for the link in my profile, if you are so inclined. You may even see my face.

I passed my driver’s licence in 2014, bought my bike, and the very same month, came upon the story of a young French who crossed the US with his own motorcycle. This impressed me so much, I thought it was so crazy, that I had to do the same… one day. So I saved money, saved some days off, and got prepared (this included reading HH. I follow the French chapter on Facebook).

I started road tripping in Europe in 2017. Nine days. Capitals and highways only. Amsterdam, Prague, Vienna... Capitals were fun (especially Vienna). Highways, not so much. I will definitively not do it again.

2018 I went farther, 15 days : through the Balkans to Greece and back. I slipped in a turn and broke a few things on the bike – nothing serious except for my pride. I got stuck one night at the Bosnian – Croatian border on the croatian side (because of a corrupt Bosian officer) while all my belongings were in Bosnia. It rained dogs. I booked a guesthouse which was closed upon my arrival. I thought I would never make it back to my stuff and would end up dead in a ditch. That was… interesting. Now it’s only a nice story, and a war wound. My bike still has scars, but wich bike doesn’t ?

My Street Triple totals 33 000 miles (53 000 km), not so bad since I don’t use it to commute. Yes, I intend to cross the U.S on a Street Triple R, with my tent and gas stove.

I plan to go through 27 states this summer or approximatively 10 – 12 000 miles, coast to coast, using Air Canada Fly your bike and starting in Maine (I heard Bangor harbored a certain writer I like). I’ll go for a tiny town called New York, then The Tail of The Dragon, the whisky route in Kentucky, and as many twists and turns I can in the west until L.A, before heading north to Washington State and Vancouver.

At least, that’s the plan. I’m determined to seize every opportunity to meet people. Someone told me recently « travelling without opening up to others is not travelling, it’s only moving ». I postponed this trip year after year – it terrifies just me – now I’m short of excuses. The last one being insurance.

Thanks for reading !

Hi all

I’m an Irishman flying my UK registered bike with AirCanada from London to Toronto in April. I got a good quote from Fernet as I have a friends address I can use in the US. I just have one question, is there anything else I need to do to ensure that the insurance is valid as soon as I land in Toronto?

The Fernet website mentions the requirement for a temporary registration with the DMV, but having asked Fernet I am still not clear on this requirement. Is it only for people purchasing a new bike in the US as a foreigner? Wont a temporary import permit be enough in my situation? The wording is a little unclear to me that’s all, so if anyone could confirm that I don’t need to worry that would be much appreciated.

Thanks

As long as you have it in hand, you should be fine. Just ensure that it does cover Canada as well as the USA. Normally it would, as all regular insurance in both countries does do both, but as this isn't quite "normal", to dot the i's and cross the t's, ask.

I don't know where they get that from, but no, you DO NOT EVER want to do a temporary registration in any country you arrive in WITH YOUR OWN BIKE. It's absolutely not required. IF you buy a bike locally, then it needs to be registered locally first, but that's it.

Temporary import permit, yes. You get that on arrival when you start the paperwork to get the bike out of customs.

Excellent Grant

Thanks for the peace of mind. I'll get booking later today :)

It is not available at the border, check the last few posts on this thread for details of how to get it.

I got my motorcycle insurance for my (dutch registered) 1993 Honda 250 Nighthawk via Fernet today. Cheryl was most helpful, couldn't be happier!

Cost for me is about 330 dollars for a year plus a 60 dollar broker fee for Fernet.
I only got third party liabilty with bodily 250/500 and property 100 as the bike isn't worth anything really.

I asked her if it was no problem using a friends adress and she confirmed that it was not a problem and that I was insured in all 50 states and Canada. So hopefully it is all legal this way.

Great news! :thumbup1:

But just to be clear, the insurance you got does NOT cover YOUR bike in any way!
The "property 100" is to cover the Ferrari you ran into and totaled. In Canada, hardly anyone gets less than a million cover (and many get 2 or 3 mill), as it also covers buildings, fires you cause that burn down a city clock, etc...

The bodily injury, same thing, especially for the USA as it's easy to hit a million in hospital bills. Canadians have a better medical system that covers anyone that wants to be, so not as big an issue.

All unlikely of course, but that's what insurance is all about.

Personally I ALWAYS ask "how much for 'more' cover/etc?" Sometimes it's a pittance and worth doing.

Grant Johnson 18 Apr 2019 15:19

sorry Popylib, the former post was by a spammer.

I have to delete your post too as you quoted his spam. And to answer the question - no they do not.

wingrider.steve 20 Apr 2019 10:48

Good news about the insurance for the US being sorted out, just waiting for the Canadian cover then I can get booked up for our trip to the US and Canada this summer.

I will be pulling a small trailer behind the bike and here in UK you are restricted to lower speeds when pulling a trailer, I was wondering if the same thing applies in Canada or can you ride at the same speed as when riding without the trailer?

Hi there everyone,

I was reading trough most of this text within the last days and asked some insurances for a policy. Unfortunately did't I get any response yet.

My motorbike is in the States (New Mexiko) - I crossed the border from Mexiko and there was no customs paper nothing at the border. Because of some family problems I went home and I just came back a few days ago. No I would like to travel for +- 2-3 months and of course need an insurance.

It's german registered motorbike. KTM1190. Apart from the missing paperwork everything is good...

I will keep on searching for possibilities - but in case there is an agent around that can help me out would be more then welcome. I got a temporary USA Address of a friend - in case that might help...

thx

Hi

best offer I got was from Progressive.

Went to an agent and there is an option for International Driving License holders (you will not find this online)...

prizes vary from 75 till 150 dolar something... It's one year minimum.

was easy and straight forward...

before I went to Farmers Insurance. They also accept International Driving License. Price was +- 200 for 6 months - with less coverage...

greetings

Any contact details for Progressive and an agent? Does this insurance cover Canada as well?

wingrider.steve 3 May 2019 16:06

At long last I'm in a position to ship my Wing to the USA for a months ride, coast to coast and I'm in the process of arranging the insurance for me to ride over there.

There are various options for the amount of liability cover ranging from $25K per person and $65K per accident up to $750K per person and $750K per accident.

As this is different to how I buy insurance here in UK I was looking for some advice on the level of cover I should be going for.

marka21 5 May 2019 16:07

I am off to anchorage may 22 and i am waiting on David Grist of HC travel who can get insurance for the us but is waiting for the ok for canada coverage. Otherwise i am going with Fernet insurance of winter park florida who will only insure you with a us address but covers the us and canada and you can cancel the policy at any time and get refunded the unused premium minus a 7% charge. Otherwise try Seguro Gringo who will insure foreign registered bikes in us canada and mexico but only on a third party basis.

Any problems?

Hi

Found a company that will insure european m/cycles and campers, whilst in the usa and canada.
Has anyone heard of them or dealt with them?

Grant Johnson 19 May 2019 20:36

they've been used for Mexico insurance for a long time iirc, but never knew they did USA / Canada.

markharf 19 May 2019 21:58

There was some sort of controversy about this company (Segurogingo)--who they cover, what sort of cover, where it's valid.... I can't remember the details, but I'd suggest either reading the fine print carefully or doing a thorough search here and elsewhere for details.

Mark

We used Fernet when we were in the US two years ago and the process went quite smoothly. I can't speak for the claims process as we didn't use it. I was underwhelmed by the breakdown cover also arranged through Fernet as they wouldn't recover us from a motorway on the grounds it was too dangerous. They told us to call 911 which we did (with some trepidation) and the police arranged for another company to recover us.

We're were hoping to take our bike over to the US and Canada in just under three weeks for a short trip but I'm not far off cancelling it as I've been looking for insurance for a while and I can't find anyone who will offer it for someone who has a UK address because of GDPR issues.

I spoke to someone from Fernet yesterday evening on the off-chance something has changed but they were still unable to help.

According to the Motorcycle Express web site they can arrange insurance for the US but not Canada or Mexico.

Has anyone been able to arrange insurance for US and Canada for a European bike with a European address?

USA into and out of Canada

I am about to ship my Wing from the UK over to the USA in a few weeks for a trip from West coast to the East.
I am planning to cross into Canada at Sault Ste Marie and then finish my trip in Toronto.
When I ship the bike from Toronto back to the UK am I likely to encounter any problems due to the bike being a UK bike, temporarily imported into the USA and then shipped out of Canada to the UK?

monnomania 11 Dec 2019 14:58

We regret, we cannot offer insurance for Canada and USA anymore as most insurance companies do not want to insure foreign registered vehicles or foreign drivers anymore.

You could try and contact Dairyland insurance company in the USA - they used to offer motorcycle insurance for USA/Canada, so perhaps they can help you.

For information of all, after months of extensive research, I have finally found a good insurance for my french registered motorbike. And even more important, the program of insurance for foreign motorbikes from Progressive is still valid! As everyone know, Progressive has a huge experience of this type of insurance (Fernet was its representative before).

I got an excellent quotation from Insurance Services of Idaho, with good coverage level and very reasonnable price for my next summer 2 months trip with my french registered motorbike in Canada and USA, including Comprehensive, Collision, Road side assistance, etc...

No comparison with all the crazy prices, opaque policies and low coverage that I got until now.

Just like before, you just need to mention an adress in the USA.

For any request and quotation, contact Haylie Morgan at Insurance Services of Idaho (on behalf of me, Jean-Louis Olive), email: haylie@idahoisi.com (phone: 208.383.9500).

At the disposal of anyone who need more information.

That is bad news!

sfcl 10 Feb 2020 22:02

Yes, Haylie told me 2 days ago that the adress has to be in Idaho. It seems that some states in the US have their own regulation or benefit of some decentralization, seems to be the case for Idaho. Anyway, good news is that any adress in Idaho will work!

Just finalized full cover motorcycle insurance with Progressive. All done online with very good help from their chat function. International drivers license can be filled in online and also a foreign (EU) motorcycle isn't a problem as lond you have a valid VIN. Payed around $250 for a full year cover including Canada for my 2018 BMW F800GS. You only need a US address and it's not necessary to live there. you need it just to pass through the digital online process. All correspondence goes by email and their website login. Very happy with this deal and all 100% correct. :thumbup1:

is not working, after several inquiries yesterday we received the answer that only residents of Idaho and Oregon are insurable in this office,
I'll keep looking

Who have you written to?
There are a number of posts regarding insurance for foreign bikes in the USA, in this thread and others in the North America forum. Also check trip planning forum.

And of course the Trip Paperwork forum is a big one to check!

Hello here is an update on the insurance issue following the COVID storm:

We are finally back on the road. After 3 years the Japanese government has finally opened the door to foreign independent travel. We arrived in Japan 3 weeks ago to recover the bikes from storage, and after considerable effort have gotten the bikes roadworthy. We are now in the process of arranging insurance for North America.

We gad a deal back in 2019 with Cheryl of FERNET. However this is no longer an option. Her mail 15 Apr 23 says-

"Our program with Dairyland is no longer available.

We are working with Motorcycle Express for these policies now. You will be able to quote your policy with the link below.

Click the link below. You will be directed to step 1 of the quote process.......

Hi

Did you manage to find a company that would offer it? I'm looking now and Progressive seem to be the favourites, however, when completing their online form, my UK driving licence is not recognised and they keep asking for a different one, same with my bike VIN#

Has anyone had any luck on this front? I know foreigners go ride over there, but how do they get insurance?

asi00007 1 Jul 2024 17:41

Progressive doesn't cover tourist,be careful.
We checked with 3 different representatives of progressive and got the same answer.
