So Finally I have everything together, the EPA Exemption Letter just arrived yesterday, Shipping has been chosen and insurance will be the one from progressive, but still have some time. 60 Days before arrival the Insurance. I used Dairyland from the UK and its a rip off. Not surprised they pulled out - probably due to cancellations once people looked around. Yes you do need a US address but I used a hotel I was staying at and they received my papaerwork. Insurance went from £300 a month to £35 that way!
I went to an agent for Progressive, and other riders I spoke to did something similar. I have also insured this way in Australia and New Zealand as well as Malaysia.

I chose my shipper, airline, personal travel insurance and all, but I'm stuck as far as motorcycle insurance is concerned.
Cheryl from Fernet is not keen on giving me a quote since I don't have a us address. I contacted one of my motorcycle's dealerships in Maine and asked him if he could help me. I'm waiting to hear from him.

I will take any help I can. DerStromer, I can see you worked it out with Progressive. Do you have a US address ?

My trip is planned between next june and september, through Montreal and Vancouver, from France.

We found a guy on FB, Alex Smith, who arranged for us a postbox address. This was enough for Fernet. Alex is active in several grouos like pan american travelers etc on FB.

Establish yourself here (just give some details about your life, your travels, where you've been and where you're going). Then describe your trip and state your needs. Chances are pretty good someone will step up and offer you use of an address.

This doesn't work unless people feel they know you--at least a little bit. And it won't work if no one knows whether you're shipping a bike from somewhere, buying locally, where you're planning to enter, and which country. Et cetera.

For example, I live in Washington State. I have no idea in the world whether I could be helpful. There's no point my bothering if you're headed for Canada, or New York, or in fact anyplace but Washington State.

I already updated my profile, and wondered if I should open a new topic or something. But since this one is one of the most reads... I will try to be as concise as possible here. I can ramble for hours ! I do it on my blog (French). Look for the link in my profile, if you are so inclined. You may even see my face.

I passed my driver’s licence in 2014, bought my bike, and the very same month, came upon the story of a young French who crossed the US with his own motorcycle. This impressed me so much, I thought it was so crazy, that I had to do the same… one day. So I saved money, saved some days off, and got prepared (this included reading HH. I follow the French chapter on Facebook).

I started road tripping in Europe in 2017. Nine days. Capitals and highways only. Amsterdam, Prague, Vienna... Capitals were fun (especially Vienna). Highways, not so much. I will definitively not do it again.

2018 I went farther, 15 days : through the Balkans to Greece and back. I slipped in a turn and broke a few things on the bike – nothing serious except for my pride. I got stuck one night at the Bosnian – Croatian border on the croatian side (because of a corrupt Bosian officer) while all my belongings were in Bosnia. It rained dogs. I booked a guesthouse which was closed upon my arrival. I thought I would never make it back to my stuff and would end up dead in a ditch. That was… interesting. Now it’s only a nice story, and a war wound. My bike still has scars, but wich bike doesn’t ?


My Street Triple totals 33 000 miles (53 000 km), not so bad since I don’t use it to commute. Yes, I intend to cross the U.S on a Street Triple R, with my tent and gas stove.


I plan to go through 27 states this summer or approximatively 10 – 12 000 miles, coast to coast, using Air Canada Fly your bike and starting in Maine (I heard Bangor harbored a certain writer I like). I’ll go for a tiny town called New York, then The Tail of The Dragon, the whisky route in Kentucky, and as many twists and turns I can in the west until L.A, before heading north to Washington State and Vancouver.


At least, that’s the plan. I’m determined to seize every opportunity to meet people. Someone told me recently « travelling without opening up to others is not travelling, it’s only moving ». I postponed this trip year after year – it terrifies just me – now I’m short of excuses. The last one being insurance.

Hi all

I’m an Irishman flying my UK registered bike with AirCanada from London to Toronto in April. I got a good quote from Fernet as I have a friends address I can use in the US. I just have one question, is there anything else I need to do to ensure that the insurance is valid as soon as I land in Toronto?

The Fernet website mentions the requirement for a temporary registration with the DMV, but having asked Fernet I am still not clear on this requirement. Is it only for people purchasing a new bike in the US as a foreigner? Wont a temporary import permit be enough in my situation? The wording is a little unclear to me that’s all, so if anyone could confirm that I don’t need to worry that would be much appreciated.

As long as you have it in hand, you should be fine. Just ensure that it does cover Canada as well as the USA. Normally it would, as all regular insurance in both countries does do both, but as this isn't quite "normal", to dot the i's and cross the t's, ask.

I don't know where they get that from, but no, you DO NOT EVER want to do a temporary registration in any country you arrive in WITH YOUR OWN BIKE. It's absolutely not required. IF you buy a bike locally, then it needs to be registered locally first, but that's it.

Temporary import permit, yes. You get that on arrival when you start the paperwork to get the bike out of customs.
