Leaving bike in Washington state
Greetings bike buffs.
Looking for a secure place to leave my bike in Washington state from early July to early September 2020. Am riding from Toronto to Seattle then flying home to the UK returning in sep to continue. Cheers brim |
Brim, you are a real optimist if you think it will be possible to make a trip across Canada and into the USA anytime during 2020.
But - if things turn out better than foreseen with this pandemic, and your trip does become possible, then the easiest way to store your moto would be to contact some motorcycle dealers in Seattle and ask who offers "winter storage" of motorcycles. Most large dealers do, and it doesn't have to be "winter" for them to store the bike for you. Pricing varies, but probably somewhere around USD $50 a month would be a starting point. Be aware, though, that if your moto is from the UK, you can't 'legally' leave it in the USA or Canada when you depart these countries. That's not to say it can't be done, especially if you will only be away for a short time, but the basis on which a tourist vehicle is permitted into a foreign country is on the assumption that the tourist will take the vehicle out with them when they leave. Failing to do that can be considered an unauthorized importation of a vehicle. If you want to ensure strict compliance with import regulations, you should investigate storing your moto in a customs bonded warehouse. Michael |
Many thanks Michael,
Sure is getting worse out there could be delaying a year. I hear what your saying on about customs so depending on how it goes over the US boarder will assess the situation at the time. Thanks again and keep safe |
HI Brim:
You didn't indicate where the motorcycle is registered (UK or Canada). Either way, you might be better off to leave the moto in Canada (Vancouver area) and take a bus or plane to Seattle, then return to the UK from there. I think the Canadian authorities might be a little bit more tolerant of an overstay than the Americans, which is a roundabout way of saying that there is a greater risk of the Americans being intolerant. I agree the best places to store a moto is with a moto dealer. They usually offer storage in winter for sure, which includes a trickle charger on it...gas stabilzer.
The other issue as pointed out, is the vehicle is temporality imported, which means it has to leave with the passport holder, at least for most countries. You dont want o have it seized or impounded by authorities. FYI there are many places to rent a motorcycle in Seattle as well. Eagle Rider is a popular company, usually is part of a dealer as well. HD and BMW dealers are most popular, but some Triumph dealers too... Good Luck...:Beach: |
