Spring time weather Halifax
Dear fonts of all......
We are starting to plan a top to toe Americas in 2015. Plan is to freight 3 bikes to Halifax, Nova Scotia, in Spring then ride West, North a bit, before turning South. I'd be grateful for thoughts on when the weather in Nova Scotia and central Canada (around the great lakes etc) turns from winter to a more reasonable clime. Ta |
I did that trip in 2007 ā from Halifax NS, then around-and-about to California.
I got to Halifax during the last week of June ā and finished-up in CA towards the end of September, sticking mainly to the northern half the Continent. Exactly 90 days in all, which saved all the hassle of having to organise an extended visa. Weather-wise, the timing was perfect. How long do you intend going for? If you were to start much earlier in the year than me - i.e. during March/April - then I would be tempted to kick-off further south; enjoy that region first, then head north towards the mid-summer months. It can get mighty hot (and humid) down south from mid-May to September in the southern states. Iām guessing you intend to ship over with Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics, right? In which case consider picking-up your bikes in Charleston or Brunswick instead, particularly if you're starting earlier than May/June. Remember too:

Thanks Keith
We have certainly thought about starting earlier and more Southerly. Also h:wink2:as the appeal of a "figure of 8" trip |
Having lived in Halifax for several months March - May and other parts of Canada during both winter and summer and crosssed from Ottawa to Banff numerous times at different times of year - I would say anytime after the start of May is generally OK - although you may get a few coldish days - can remebember my cup of tea freezing solid overnight in Banff in my camper in early May on one trip
