Trans American trail
Hi is it possible to hire a bike to do the TAT would insurance be a problem for a Brit, one way hire etc, are there companies set up that offer this, it seems to expensive to fly my bike over and then fly it back to the UK.
Thanks |
The only thing I could find for you is wdsma.com - Western Dual Sport Home!. They are in Denver, CO which would only be for the western part of TAT.

There's not too many companies that rent out well prepped bikes to ride the TAT/ Continental Divide/TCAT etc as these trips are pretty hard on bikes and damage is likely to happen.
Instead of flying your bike over from Europe and back again, consider buying a bike in North America, riding it for a trip and store it somewhere at a friends or helpful HUBB/ADV riders place, then you can return and do some more riding across the pond - you wont run out of places to ride over here :) You can pick up a well prepared lightly used DR650/KLR650 fairly cheap in the USA and Canada, do some research for the easiest State/Province to register and insure a bike, if you have friends over here, then its a big bonus to have an address and accommodation to use. |
I've just posted a very similar question... when do you intend to go?

Riding the TAT
For Wgaf, if you want to fly over to the Eastern Coast of the US, ad buy a trail bike to ride on the TAT.....I am more than willing to ride from the West Coast of the US to the East Coast, meet up with you, ride the TAT together, all the way, from East Coast to West Coast.....then.....you can decide whether to sell the bike you bought a few weeks earlier, or.....store that same bike at my place in Western Washington, and have it available for you if and when you ever come back to the USA.
I agree that it will cost a LOT less money to buy a bike over here, use it, then resell it.....rather than renting one to use. I own a cottage on IOM (Isle of Man), and get over there a few times every year, where I also have two bikes stored for my use. I can also help with the resale of your trail bike over here, if you need to get back to your home, and the bike hasn't sold yet. I have a large property, very secure shop, and every tool imaginable for working on bikes....aside from the 14 motorcycles I own. BTW, I will be riding a 2017 Honda CRF250L-Rally on the TAT. The offer is sincere, so think about it. Oh, and cger......I am available to go almost anytime, so...when are YOU planning to ride the TAT? Maybe we can get Wgaf and you and I to all do it together. |
TAT
A couple of great options to think about, I will have to look at bike prices on the east coast and work out the best route price wise, I'm not in love with feeding the airlines money on two lots of shipping the bike.
Many thanks for you're kind offer and options much food for thought. Tim |
