Trans-lab highway

Has anyone done the Trans-lab highway on an F800GS yet?
Can a F800GS make it between gas stations or would I have to carry extra fuel? Is there any fuel in Cartwright Junction? If not is the closest gas station north or south of Cartwright junction.

Not much fuel...

I just came up the new Phase III part of the highway. I'm on a bicycle so I don't need fuel (except a little bit for the campstove), but I can tell you there are no human inhabitants and no powerlines and no nothing between Port Hope Simpson and Happy Valley-Goose Bay. However there is a big road construction project in the middle of the Phase III section and I bet you could get a bit of gas from somebody there in an emergency. See my blog for a bunch of GPS info about where everything is: A few years in North, Central & South America: GPS tracks and waypoints to download:. Or try here for the day-by-day story in that area: crazyguyonabike.com: Bicycle Touring: A few years in North, Central & South America, by Jeff Kruys and scroll down to the June 2010 entries.

I'm in Happy Valley now, heading off towards Lab City over this coming week, although it's 5°C and raining today and tomorrow, yuck. No blackflies yet though!

Check out Advrider.com. there are more than a few people who've ridden the Trans Labrador Hwy, though I do not know if any were on the F800GS... you should be able to find out the distance between gas stations though.

I'll be interested in reading your report (please do one!) I'm planning the same trip next year on my DRZ400 with a friend (probably on a KLR650)

I think we're gonna take a deture and head up to Hudson Bay... just cause it's only a day and a half out of the way...

You will find fuel in Baie Comeau (KM 0), Motel Énergie/Manic 5 (KM 214), Relais Gabriel (KM 317), Fermont (KM 407), Churcill Falls approx. 260 Km from Fermont, Happy Valley-Goose Bay 291 Km from Churchill Falls, Cartwright 372 Km from HV-GB, Port Hope Simpson 180 Km from Cartwright, and then there are lots of small villages down to Blanc Sablon. Some don't have gas some do.

If your bike can do 300 kms not a problem, just carry a 10L jerry and it's goin' to be fine!!

Should be fine on the 800 then, average 350km to a tank.

Carry an extra bit anyway, unless you're both confident and experienced. Maybe it rains and gets slick and you air down your tires and there's a strong headwind. Maybe all at once.

I carry a five liter gas can bungied on back, and it's just about right for making the transition between worrisome and carefree on long stretches. Besides, it contributes to my rough-and-ready-overlander image, which is what it's all about. Or did I get that part wrong somehow?

I've also got a 22 liter tank, which it sounds like you don't.

Hope that's helpful.

Mark
