USA Canada bike insurance-compulsory?
Can anyone tell me if bike insurance is compulsory in the USA and Canada in the same way as Europe, i.e. Would I be riding illegally without it and risking arrest/fines or is it purely an optional thing?
Thanks |
YES it is compulsory.
Go to the paperwork page - link on left - for some details. Lesson: Lois (UK) just got her bike back after impounding for no insurance in Vancouver BC - CDN$575.00 ticket plus CDN$100 for the tow. Gail at mcexpress sorted her out for 3 months insurance, and it was MUCH less than the ticket. Note that if the cop is in a bad mood it's jailtime. Also, for Brits - you MUST carry your proof of ownership, insurance and drivers licence in North America at all times. For that matter, you must carry them all everywhere BUT the UK! Contact Motorcycle Express for insurance information in North America for travellers. Tell Gail we sent you. ------------------ Grant Johnson Seek, and ye shall find. ------------------------ One world, Two wheels. www.HorizonsUnlimited.com |
Thanks for the advice. I've tried motorcycle express but they are very expensive .4x my yearly UK insurance rate for 6 months cover. I think I will need to shop around.
Great website by the way, may catch you at Trenton if all goes well |
Good luck shopping around - insurance in North America is VERY expensive compared to the UK. Only 4x - what a deal!
Trenton?? That was last years BMWMOA meeting... Check out the HU Meetings page - link on left - for what's happening where, and where we'll be this year. ------------------ Grant Johnson Seek, and ye shall find. ------------------------ One world, Two wheels. www.HorizonsUnlimited.com |
