Wild camping across the USA?
Does anyone successfully wild camp on trips across the USA? And if so, any tips on how you do it?
On my trips across the US, almost every paved road seems to have fences running down it either side, which obviously means the land is owned and you can't camp there even if you can figure out a way past the fence. Maybe it is only possible to wild camp if you're a very long way from paved roads, riding trails? |
You may need to head west where there are millions of acres of BLM and forestry land.
https://freecampsites.net/ is one and there are other similar sites. Obviously US being car and RV-centric, a lot of them are more set up for RVs as they can be a long walk in but there is plenty of choice for tenters as well. Our first trip to the US was 4 months (we have a 35' Class A motorhome) and we spent only one night in a commercial campground and very few that we had to pay any money for. Municipal Campsites, Engineer Corps, BLM, Forestry dispersed camping - all cheap or free and there are thousands of them Not only in the USA either. Here you can find a Google Earth Map overlay for the BLM land: klickme
and don't forget the AdvRider tentspace thread. |
Oh wow... What a fantastic resource, almost too easy! Ok, next year's travels up to Alaska may not cost me very much after all :-)
