I know this is a bit early (I had hoped to be on the road already) but I'm planning a trip out through central and north asia next year. The theme for the trip is lightweight with regular exploration stops off the beaten track along the way. Europe (inc Romania, Bulgaria), Georgia, Stans, Russia, Mongolia, Russia (up to the Artic circle) and then BAM up to Magadan where I hoping to go ultra-light and head east from Magadan to Evensk and beyond.

Is anyone interested or planning a similar trip? I'm going to be on a long-range WR250R and hoping to hear from anyone else who is thinking about a similar trip.:thumbup1:

I forgot about this post, I particularly like the juxtaposition of "long-range" and "WR250R"...

(I had to fill up twice to get from Derby to High Wycombe but thank God - that seat is first on my list of must-do's)

How big a tank can you get for it?

Right now its a 3.5Gal tank. IMS are building a 4.5gal tank in time for the trip. These are USgallons too :(

I still need to play with it some more but it's good for another 5 litres of fuel.

Mate ! I'm doing a similar route, sorta, and I'm stuck (on map for now, haven't left yet lol) at Evensk, did you find a route further east ? I want to reach Uelen from there...

You wont get past Evensk that route ... you will have to be a champion trials rider on a trials bike with long range tanks just to get to Evensk.

If you are on a bike, you can get to Egvekinot, by the route 2 separate groups of Poles did in 2009 ... take a barge from Seymchan to Chersky ... then there is a road from Chersky to Egvekinot. Thats about the limits of where you can go at the moment in summer.

To get to Uelen, you would need to go in winter, with ice tyres, a huge fuel capacity and ultra low gearing, driving over the frozen swamps.

No. I'm not on a bike, I stuffed my back four years ago in an accident, my bike lost, the car won :)
I'll be in a Landcruiser with 250L in tanks plus 80L in jerrycans.

Ice tyres... well they're not spiked...

Do you have a link to those Poles ? Is that the Mac you were talking about ?

You can theoretically drive to Uelen ... its been done a few times, by the big 6WD Russian Trucks. Quite notably once by an Italian woman Stephania Zini, based in Moscow, who toook a ZiL (and zupport crew) to Uelen then over to Alaska and onwards ...

She did it in March, driving over the frozen landscape, often for days and days on end in 1st gear, with one person walking in front of the truck.
