Hi Boycie, I'm in a similar boat to you, Ukraine is as far east as I have travelled before, but I'm doing a similar trip next year (2015). Hopefully you'll keep us posted. .

The 90 days in 180 rule for the six-month visa gives you a TOTAL of 90 days within Russia during the period of the visa.

Correct. But I think we are talking about the customs issue here, which lumps Russia and Kazakhstan as one unit.

I entered Russia from Abkhazia, and there was no stamp given at the border, which was a nice stroke of luck as there was no record on my visa of when i first entered, and on subsequent entries no migration card to note the date either, effectively giving me more than 180 days on my 1 year visa :innocent:
