Buying a bike in Japan
Hey, I'm from Australia, but I want to buy a bike in Japan and ride it thru central asia, then back to australia. Does anyone know if I would be able to get a carnet in Japan for the bike? If yes, Is it gonna cost?

The HUBB has a wonderful search function.
Try it out. The subject of purchasing a bike has been covered before. This is my most recent comment on the subject. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...646#post417260 Carnets are acquired from JAPAN AUTOMOBILE FEDERATION (JAF) You don't need one for central asia, though. JAF requires a deposit for the carnet as bank bonds/insurance policy is not available for foreigners. And if you did have a carnet, you would have to bring the bike back to Japan to get your refund. |
Thanks heaps, haha, been searching forums on and off for the last year but had not found anything difinitive. Have also emailed australian govt and got conflicting info from them.
A bunch of countries i will ride thru require carnet - iran, pakistan, india, nepal, malaysia, indo, east timor. Guess I will look into getting a friend in japan to register (maybe even signing it over to me somehow once it is purchased and registered). Carnet will be difficult tho - still waiting on automobile association in oz to reply (if it is at all possible they can issue a carnet). Another option maybe South Korea? anyway, thanks again! |
