Entering Ukraine from Russia
Im headed West and need to cross from Russia into Ukraine. With the 40-100,000 Russian troops with tanks on the border, is there a border crossing open for a US citizen to use? I have emailed the Ukraine embassy in NY but they never replied.
Anybody getting through? Without a tank, that is. |
Russian border is opened, Ukraine border is closed for Russian cars and bikes, but should be open for other country residents. Troops are not blocking borders.

There are about 15 border crossing points which you might use. If you wished to give the separatist troubles in Eastern Ukraine as wide a berth as possible, aim to enter either Chernihiv or Sumy regions of Ukraine. Type 'Troyebortnoye' into Google Maps - this frequently-used border crossing which is far from the troubles, on a main route to Kyiv. The border crossings I would definitely avoid are those going into Donetsk and Southern Luhansk Regions, which would take you through separatist-occupied towns such as Amrosievka or Antratsit. The crossing near the coast, west of Taganrog should be OK, but is more risky as there have been separatist activities in Mariupol. Hope this helps Daniel |
my wife is Belorussian. Traditionally there was a lot of cross border traffic between the two countries for work, commerce etc. There have been a number of reports from her family in Belarus of people crossing into Ukraine being mugged, robbed, beaten etc. There is a section of the population who have taken the opportunity to indulge in general lawlessness and violence. This is all in areas well away from the East (North West)
as an affluent (in there eyes) you would be a prime target. That's before you consider the very considerable risks of driving/riding through what is to all intents a purposes a war zone. Although I have been to the Ukraine many times I would absolutely avoid the country at the moment. |
It has been about four weeks since we left Ukraine and crossed into Russia, but we had absolutely no problems in Lviv, Kiev or at the border.
In a few months, when we've been through Central Asia, we'll likely return back through Ukraine. If concerned about the unrest, avoid the eastern cities and cross close to Ukraine. |
will be at border ukraine/ russia in 2 weeks
