We crossed the Georgia / Russia border a few days ago with our big truck. No major issues. Long queues, everything is a bit complicated, friendly and helpful people especially on the Russian side. It took us 4,5 hours to get through.
Insurance, SIM card and money change directly after border post.
Many checkpoints in Chechen Republic and Dagestan; friendly and no corruption

Thanks for this info. Which border crossing did you use (where did you cross the border)?

We are planning a trip from Finland (through Russia) to Georgia in a couple of months and have noticed that there might be some troubles crossing border from west (Sochi) to Georgia due to Abkhasia situation. I assume the border from North (Vladikavkaz) is ok to use.

Any info regarding Georgia and especially Abkhasia area are more than welcome.

The border from Vladivakaz is the only one you can use.
