Insurance (car) for Russia

Hi all,

We will be entering Russia from Latvia. And I have noticed that Russia isn't on my green card (not really surprised).
I have read about getting insurance on the road, but I read conflicting things, that it should be easy while other say it was difficult to find. It will also depend on where you enter Russia I guess.

I would like to get an insurance for 3 to 4 months. Hopefully it would also include Kazakhstan (CIS countries perhaps). I have read for Mongolia that you can just get insurance at the border if you want.

I'm also looking into arranging it at home before we go, but perhaps that isn't necessary if it is easier or cheaper to get on the road.

Thanks in advance.

The insurance officer will be just after the border. Usually in a petrol station or restaurants/shops.

Which border will you get through?
We crossed the most northern one in Latvia 2 years ago. The insurance office was in the petrol station. Just a lady behind a desk. It is fairly straightforward. A bit of Russian will help.

I did not try to buy the Kazakhstan insurance there. Not sure it is possible. But if you cross though a main border, again, you can get it at the border.
In 2014 we did just that when crossing from Astrakhan into Kazakhstan.

Cheers,

On most borders it is very easy to find, otherwise just ask and everyone will help how to find them.

Even when Russia is on the green card, it only covers the European part of Russia ( on most green cards there is a hint for that. )

I do not think that you can get a Russian / Kazakh insurance in one.
Even Russians buy Kazakh insurance at the border.

And Kazakh polie checks for Insurance, if you don't have one, you pay.
Usually they work together ith the insurance guys, if you don't stop for one, than they stop you and take your money anyway ( for their pocket )

In Mongolia, you can get it at the border.

Generally, I would not doit without insurance anymore.

2017 I did not buy one in Mongolia and we had an accident ( my travel mate crashed into me )
And the police got our papers right away. Passport, motorcycle papers.
We would have to stay there for weeks, untill a court clears everything
This would happen in any country then.
In my case it was easy, because i have good connected family in Mongolia.
It was a few phone-calls ant the police had to give us back our papers he same day.

But as a regular traveller without this connections you are stuck !!!

Thanks for these infos, very useful.
- My green card is valid for Russia and there is no hint specified so I think it's ok for me.
- I think it's better to buy an insurance for Mogolia, but in case of accident, do I have a reliable cover?

Check with your insurance company about the green card if it is covering Russia completely or just the European part.

I don't think that you have a reliable coverage in Mongolia, but without you are fuxxed anyway.

And if a Mongolian just thinks you have no insurance, he wants a lot of money for the smallest scratch, otherwise he calls the police....

"And if a Mongolian just thinks you have no insurance, he wants a lot of money for the smallest scratch, otherwise he calls the police.... "

OK, I see:(

Thanks guys, that gives some reassurance and means I won't arrange it in advance.

Yes I have seen those hints on the green cards, had this before with Turkey I think.
So if it was on my green card I would've imagined it would only be for European part as well.

Anyway, this will be fine, not worried about it.

From our friends blog in 2016:

"car insurance for 4 months was 10,500 Rubles ($160). We could have gotten insurance for just a month at that would have been around 8000 Rubles, but there is a discount for longer periods."
