I read a lot earlier that vehicle insurance for Russia is available at the border but may be since I crossed midnight they may be closed.

Just to report back on this, we had nothing confiscated at the Latvia/Russia border. There was a brief check inside the camper and we had to open up all the external lockers but not a thorough check by any means.
The first filling station on the Russian side had an insurance agency where we bought 60 days for 2340RUB. Also had to pay a 'road tax' of 480RUB which had to be paid in cash, That caused a bit of a problem as there was no exchange office that we could find. Eventually found one of the roadside shop sheds that would exchange some USD for us. |
Blimey are the Latvian customs really that bad? Might as well travel a little further north and enter Estonia instead?

According latest information offical announcement given by Russia allowed amount of food products is 5 kilo up to each person (products which are under import embargo). Meat, fish and milk products must be in factory boxes or airthight packings.
According announcement all items are put in scale and if amount exceeds 5 kg all exceeding items are taken away and fine is issued. If this is actually done i doubt if it is clearly visible amount dont exceed limit http://fontanka.fi/articles/16356/ |
