Kyrgyzstan routes
I'm heading into Kyrgyzstan tomorrow, from Almaty, and researching routes/passes.
I'm having a job finding the start/finish of some, such as the Kegety, and wonder if anyone has any useful waypoints or other info? Dangerousroads.org says I need a full GPS track, not sure if that's right, but I do at least need an idea of what I'm trying to do. From the pictures posted recently on FB, it doesn't look possible to get right through, but it would be nice to try some anyway. Any recommendations much appreciated. I'm trying to do a loop of up to a week, before returning to Almaty. EDIT: I assume I can cross directly from Almaty to Issyk Kul? Just noticed the border crossing isn't shown on this forum's waypoints... |
Regarding my final question, this is from a Kazakh biker in Almaty:
"Because you are not the citizen of Kazakhstan you cannot use kokairyk border branch. You can cross the border only in Khorgos or Karasu passes." EDIT: Other people have since told me it's only possible by horse or foot. |
I hope to be heading that way in a few weeks, please keep us posted on good/bad routes.
