Leave car in Russia or Mongolia
 

Hi,
We are driving with a car from Europe to Mongolia. Maybe we will drive back, maybe not. It will depend on the condition of the car at the end of the trip.
Because of that we want to be prepared to leave the car in Mongolia or in Russia. Wed like to donate the car to charity, dump it, sell it, or scrap it. Whatever is the best and most affordable option. Does anyone have any experience with that? What is the best and cheapest option?

Note: Its a rather old car from '87. And we will have carnet the passage with us because we are crossing Iran.

If you dump it, sell it or spend it, you have to do the custom stuff.
In Russia and in Mongolia.

So be prepared to have someone to help you wit the customs and the taxes you have to pay for that....

How I am able to estimate the costs of those taxes etc.?

Unless you dump it in nomansland at the boarder between Russia and Mongolia. Thats why there are allways so many trash cars between boarders. Export it and dont import it into the next country. Not nice for the enviroment. True...

I have not seen cars in nomansland there.

Also you can not enter the next border from nomansland by foot.

Specially in the western border in Tashanta.
Nomansland is about 24km , and there are posts in between.

And at the border in Altanbulag there is no space between the border to dump cars as far as I remember.

You'll have a great time trying to get your deposit back, most providers need to see that the car has been brought back to the country of origin or at least disposed of legally.

We are not going to dump our car in the nomansland. I don't think this would be appropriate. But thank you anyway.

I understand that we would have to do it legally. If we would have a car crash or something we would still have to import it in to the country even if the car wouldn't be functional anymore?
Anyone has a good idea what to do with the car once we decide to leave it in mongolia? Is anyone there willing to buy our car legally? Who could help with taxes etc (Hotels, Police,...)?

What kind of car is it? You can declare the value of the car as a spare part once u are in Mongolia the taxes will be 15% of the value of the car I am Mongolian living in UB let me know if u need help once u are in Mongolia also from this year most of Europeans require visas due to Asean meeting in July just FYI if u heading this way.

Leaving a car in Mongolia/Russia
 

Currently stuck in UB with a 1997 Landrover Discovery. We were refused at the border today when we attempted to cross in to Russia without the car and are now having a hard time finding a solution.
Impossible to drive it all the way back to England as our visa expires in Russia in 10 days.
Anyone know how to either leave it in Russia or Mongolia?
We are willing to give it away, or have it scrapped…any help is good help.

I would ask the customs guys at the border! Novel solution it seems, but they will know what needs to be done if it CAN be done! Or they will know someone...

If you ask at the border into Mongolia, they will immediately take a deposit for your car.!!

I met some people where exact this happened.
That comes from the fact, that a lot of the members of the mongol rallye left their cars there, and they dont want that.

What about getting a new Russian visa in UB?

Last year I met a guy in UB at Oasis who got a Russian transit Visa in UB.

Thank you for your replay. Its a Volvo 740 from '87. Would it be suitable to declare our car as spare parts?
This would certainly be an option as it would not cost a fortune. Happy to contact you if there is any need.
