leaving a bike in mongolia
 

does anybody know how legally to donate upto six motorbikes to a worthy cause in mongolia?
it must be legal as hassle free as poss.
we are just exploring options at the moment as to the best way we can ride to mongolia and fly home[only got 4/5weeks off work].
so one plan is buy a cheap bike ride it there and donate on arrival.
ive emailed the mongol rally people but no reply as yet.
got a reply from the oasis guest house who say its poss. bt as yet no real details. so thought i would ask here.
they will almost definatly be over 600cc machines.

What sort of "worthy cause" are you thinking of?
A large hard-to-maintain modern big bore bike is not really something a charity organization can use. They need simple-construction easy-to-fix vehicles. A 20 year old Russian bike would most likely be of more use than a brand new BMW. If something breaks in the middle of nowhere, it has to be fixable in the middle of nowhere. The idea of donating a touring bike is nice, but I doubt that it would be practical.
Someone running a tour agency, however could probably use the bikes if they want to go through the hassle and costs of permanently importing. That is where you should be looking if you have bikes you just don't want to take home.

there in lies the problem, we plan to spend about £1000 or less on a bike, so prob. old transalps and the like. as to the good cause, we dont really have anything in mind, we just need a legal way of leaving them behind. but all the better if some good came from it.

There's no mark made in your passport that you enter with a vehicle, nor on your custom's declaration. They will ask you what border your leaving from (have one in mind), then just dump the bikes in the countryside somewhere - someone will soon steal them for you.

A friend of mine recently abandoned his ailing Niva somewhere in 40cm of snow in western Khovsgol, and went on to China with no problems.

ok, seems like we can, if it comes to it just walk away from the bikes,
but what then happens when back in the uk when the dvla come knocking?

The DVLA will never 'come knocking'... There is a tick box on the V5 which says you have personally broken up / disposed of the vehicle. Tick this and it's off the books!

I do overland bike tours in Mongolia and currently I am in Europe driving from Mongolia to England on camper van the first Mongol doing reciprocal overland trip from UB to UK. I made to Paris after 2 month of driving. I might be interested perhaps of buying or figuring a reasonable solution both for charity or business. If you have something like Tenere would also be good. ive bought an africa twin for the trip, if i was to sell it id want about £3000.
alot i know but it is a very good one.
at the moment im planning to freight it back, however ill pass your email on to the others who may be in touch re selling or donating.
will you be in mongolia at the end of june?
and do you know of any assistance to get the bikes frieghted?
grateful for any help and info.

I'm sure you could find someone to ride an AT back to the UK for you, I know I'd be up for it! That said it might be cheaper to freight than to take an extra 15,000 km on the clocks?

im considering offers but would like to know more on the legaleties of it.
especially the border problems for the returning rider.

well after exploring all the options, ive decided to freight the bike back to the uk.
as there is going to be four bikes, we have a price of 750euros not including crates to get them home.
