Leaving bike in neighbouring country to backpack in Afghanistan
Does anybody have experience or information about leaving your vehicle in a neighbouring country, probably Uzbekistan or Tajikistan while visiting Afghanistan? is it possible and are double entry visas available for either of these countries?
|
Tajikistan has a double entry visa, but I don't know how you will handle the moto with the customs as I have no experience with heavy bikes.
If I were you, I would consider only Tajikistan as the afghan Wakhan seems to be probably the region of Afghanistan that is safest, you have to cross near Khorog, in Khorog there was an afghan consulate, when I was there, so you can pick the visa there. |
I advice the same. I visted northern Afghanistan several times last few years and Wakhan is completely safe. You can cosider going there on bike. Ishkhashim is the best place to cross the border.
Here is my movie with English subtitles from my first Wakhan ride. WAKHAN Where the road ends.mp4 - YouTube PM me if you want any info about leaving bike in Tajikistan or if you are going to visit Afghan by bike. |
If you plan to leave your bike Tadj, just remember the standard TIP is only 15 days. I believe you can extend this in Dushanbe.

Thank you for your replies, they are both helpful and encouraging, I had no idea it was actually possible to enter Afghanistan with a bike and will bear it in mind.
Thanks particularly to Sambor for that fantastic film, I would encourage anybody looking at this thread to take time to watch it, a tremendous adventure where few dare to tread. Any more useful information gratefully received, I expect to be posting a few more questions here in the coming months. Mark |

The red hair/green eyes (or blonde hair/blue eyes) are often attributed to when Alexander the Great went through the area on his conquests. Some of his army stayed back and settled there, allegedly. By the way, the journalists who ride in Afghanistan are still there last time I heard. |

Epic, awsome, and a great inspiration Sambor. I am aiming for a full round of the Caspian Ocean next summer. Something tells me it`s not gonna stop there.
RIP IZI Haakon |
Leave your bike in Termiz and head across. Definantly don't do it solo if your heading beyond Mazar. Travelling Afghanistan earlier this year was a very highly rewarding experience.
I highly recommend going with Untamed Borders, for anything beyond the Wakhan (or possibly Mazar) |
