Leaving China on a Chinese bike

I am planning a sort of RTW trip, starting May/June 2019 from China on my Chinese registered Benelli. Getting conflicting information about the paperwork needed to leave China, as I do not intend returning the bike to China. The bike is three months old and registered in my name, I am South African, so leaving the bike in China is also not an option, as I will be leaving anyway.

Does anyone have any information or practical experience for leaving China on a Chinese registered bike? Proposed route is through Kazakhstan, possibly Kyrgyzstan first, Russia, Georgia, Turkey, Europe to Portugal. From there I will make a call.

I saw multiple accounts that it can be done, u just need an ATA Carnet, which cost 50% of the bike's price

How did u register the bike under your name? I've Chinese driving license but don't have " proof of residency " . What kind of documents are required? Thanks

Leaving China

Hi there,

it has been done, but I dont think its easy, nore cheap, if you do it offically. Ask a HU member Nuffsaid, he has done it and he can tell you a lot about it. But read all his posts before asking him.

I have only left China on my Swiss registered bike in 2015 ... took me 10 days :innocent:

If you want to know how I would do it now, just send me a PM.

Enjoy riding China, I enjoyed it very much on my own with only three words of Chinese.

I just needed my passport, driving licence and proof of residence. I live and work in China, so had no problem, although they did wanted to know where I will keep the bike and where I will ride it, as motorbikes are banned in part of my city, as in many cities of China. I just said "outside" and played dumb. I live in the banned area, but apart from a camera fine, had no problems yet, as you are allowed to park a bike, but not ride it. Chinese logic:rolleyes2:

AFAIK, China does not recognizes the Carnet system. I am not willing to pay for this and lose it, as I do not intend to return to China once I leave. At least with the bike.

Hi Jonker,

I am planning the same this year. My plan is to start from early August in Chongqing and then heading west to Europe. I also have a chinese registered bike. But unlike your's it's not registered in my name as this was impossible although I am also living and working in China.

Same as you I also wonder which documents are required. So if anyone has some more informations about this, let me know.

Cheers
Andreas
