Hang on... it's going to be a lot more expensive!

So Borg Sea Air in Seoul requested the dimensions of the box my bike would be crated in. I told them the inside measurements of the crate will be 190cm x 86cm x 97cm.

They now tell me that the outside measurements of the crate will therefore be 220cm x 145cm x 120cm and that this equates to 3,828,000 cubic centimeters.

They then divide this by a magical 6000 = 638KG weight by volume!
Apparently "chargeable weight" is the greater of either "gross weight" or "weight by volume". In my case the gross weight is 220KG but the weight by volume is 638KG and so they will go therefore with the 638KG.

The idea is to take care of the guy who wants to air freight, for example, 100 meters cubed of feathers :) If he were only charged by gross weight then the airline would make no money and yet have half the hold used up.

Gross weight for me was costing about $1,850 but based on this charging regime the cost will be over $4,000 and at that rate I would be better off taking a share in Yuri's container for $1,650 although it will take weeks to get to Vancouver and another $700 CAN to recover.

I checked specs for my DR650 shipment from last June -- 330 kg gross weight, 392 kg chargeable weight, 197 x 97 x 123 cm -- not sure if that is interior or exterior, but it's on my final shipment documentation.
