Assuming you're entering Korea from Russia, you need to get your moto from Vlad to Seoul as well on a ferry and that's over $800, including yourself and bike on the ferry and customs and service fees. Sea shipping is cheaper, but then again you're incurring daily expenses for a month or however long it takes for the boat to cross the Pacific. For anyone shipping into Vancouver by either air or sea, BE ABSOLUTELY SURE YOUR VEHICLE IS 100% SPOTLESS and free of any little bit of "foreign dirt." Vancouver customs takes "foreign dirt" very, very seriously and you do not want to hear that your vehicle needs to return to Korea or Vlad after it fails the Vancouver customs inspection! :( |
Flight and ferry

What airline freighted your bike to Vancouver? I heard Air Canada have a "fly your bike" scheme. Were there significant costs to recover your bike in Vancouver? Any ballpark idea on the all in cost from when you left Vlad until you were on the road again in Vancouver? Thanks |

Yuri runs a shipping outfit called Links Ltd. in Vlad and has served moto riders and other overlanders for years. Yuri is also the man for those wishing boat shipment from Vlad to Vancouver, or elsewhere. Search his name on this site, you'll find plenty of references. All easily done by email. My bike did ship on Air Canada but not under the "fly your bike" program, that applies only between Canada and Europe last I knew. Not available for Asia, Africa, South America. As for moto retrieval costs in Vancouver, I'm not sure... figure on a couple of hundred USD, I think. I didn't pay anything because my bike was rejected by Vancouver Customs because of the "foreign dirt" I mentioned before... what a nightmare doh Just a bit of dirt under a fender despite spending a couple of hours scrubbing the bike at car wash in Seoul. Air Canada Cargo was awesome in brokering a solution with Customs that enabled my bike to be trucked into the Seattle in its crate. So I paid no Customs release fee in Canada. Air Canada took pity on me and waived all its fees except a nominal trucking fee, so it ended up costing me less than it would have otherwise  |
Thanks again Ride Far - very useful info!
I contacted Air Canada who forwarded me onto Air Canada in Seoul who confirmed that the "fly your bike" scheme is operable but via their shipping agent Borg Air Sea Transport. I've now contacted Borg to establish costing. I had also contacted Yuri Melnik in Vladivostok re sea shipping and he quotes $1650 all in Vladivostok to Vancouver. But the recovery in Vancouver will cost $700 Canadian according to Yuri's recommended agent in Vancouver - Astra Intl Moving and Shipping - that takes a lot of the good out of it. And there is talk too of the agricultural check - that was real drama that you experienced! Just in relation to the ferry I think the Dong Chun runs from Zarubino to Sokcho so is the Donghae Ferry another operator? Where did it sail from? $800 seems expensive and all adds a lot of $$ to the Air Freight option. |

https://www.aircanada.com/cargo/shar...ENG_062015.pdf I'm pretty sure Dong Chun ferry shut down a few years ago. Yuri will know. Donghae ferry sails right from the main port in downtown Vlad operated by an outfit called DBS Ferry. Yuri handles all the ferry stuff very well. The day before the ferry sailed, he picked up me and some other riders from our hotels and led us through getting bikes on the boat and our personal ticketing confirmations. bier |

Just got this from Borg - Air Canadas Shipping Agent... I told them shipping referred to a KLR650 but they are estimating 220kg because they didn't know exact weight. AIR FREIGHT RATE = KRW 5950 / KGS = KRW 1,309,000.00 FUEL SURCHARGE = KRW 100 / KGS = KRW 22,000.00 HANDLING CHARGE = KRW 50,000 DANGEORUS GOODS AIRLINE SUCHARGE = KRW 51,800 DANGEROUS GOODS HANDLING CHARGE = KRW 50,000 PACKING CHARGE = KRW 350,000 AIRPORT CHARGE = KRW 20,000 DOCUMENTATION FEE = KRW 50,000 DELIVERY CHARGE EX PACKING FACTORY TO AIRPORT = KRW 150,000 PACKING HANDLING CHARGE = KRW 50,000 CUSTOMS CLEARANCE FEE = KRW 30,000 (MIN) or 0.2% of value TERMINAL HANDLING CHARGE = KRW 50 /KGS = KRW 11,000.00 Total KRW 2,121,800 = US$1,850 DELIVERY CHARGE FROM YOUR DOOR TO PACKING FACTORY: If you bring the bike to the packing company, it has no cost. But if we have to collect it from somewhere, you have to pay the delivery charges. I don’t know pick-up point where you release, so I just leave it as “at cost”. Above cost changeable as per cargo details. Before shipping, the cost should pay in Korea. I calculated above quotation based on 220kg because there is no detail of motorbike. If weight is changed, airfreight rate can be changed. Also above airfreight rate is current one, so it can be changed in JUL or AUG. Please kindly re-check the airfreight rate with us before shipping. In order to arrange shipment, we need your passport copy and receiver name in Vancouver. And you cannot use agency in YVR(Vancouver) because in Canada, brokers do not act on behalf of individuals, so you have to present to customs and make declaration directly with customs. FYI, You have to remove the fuel in motorcycle when you moving it by air. In addition, you have to fill in attached documents.
