Another route !
Hallo guys,
I finished my ride around the world this summer, (Round The World - sverrirt.blog.is) and because of the shipping problem from Magadan, I changed route and went to Vladivostok, and took a ferry from there to Japan. I then airfreighted the bike from Tokyo to Anchorage in Alaska. I then took the scheduled flight to Achorage via Seattle. Sverrir |

What were the costs involved? Thanks Dirk |
Dear old punk,
W140? Do it in style! It has always been my wish to travel around the world in a Mercedes but my choice would be a W124 Estate or W202 Saloon. The W140, being rear wheel drive only, will struggle to get from Skovorodino to Magadan via Yakutsk. There are rivers to cross and alot of muddy roads which are not ideal W140 territory. The rivers only get low enough to cross in trucks in late summer early winter at the end of August. Believe me when I say Magadan is out (you'd need to cross some rivers on the back of a lorry because some bridges are broken). Next, from Khabarovsk to Vanino, the road is unpaved and can get extremely difficult (from what I have read) to pass. The fastest route is to head to Vladivostock - in fact stick to the Federal Road throughout Chitinskaya and Amurskaya oblast - the new one they are building. 700kms from Khabarovsk in ONE day. From Vladivostock you can get a ferry to Japan and then ship from Japan to Anchorage. If you are feeling rich, you might even be able to airfreight the car as anchorage is a major freight hub between NA and Asia. That would be my preferred solution. The Americans might also want your car cleaned really well before they let it into America - all those creepy crawlies hidng in nooks and crevices. Consult with the Yanks. That's enough to start. Feel free to ask more questions. I did quite alot of research and the only sticky bit I didn't yet figure out was the Japan Alaska link. New York to Southampton in a cruise liner - must be space for a car there. The old QE2 had a garage in it and those ships always say no baggage limit! Keep us informed. Les |

Got a camera man and Russian speakin student on board. Donated car and prepared it myself as run is for charity. Sheffield to Sheffield Alabama or bust. Air freight out of Japan @$9000 so relyin on sponcer's, Thats the snag at mo but will fund it myself if all fails. Do tell us how to get to Magadan by air with a motorcycle for $1500. This is something veteran motorcycle travelers have not managed to accomplish even domestically from within Russia. Did you do it? We are eagerly awaiting your inside information... |
