Magadan to Alaska !!!
Hallo there,
I am planning a trip round the world next summer, and the plan is to go Road of Bones, and to Magada. From there I was planning to go to Alaska, but found out that Air Magadan is not flying anymore. Do you have any suggestions ! Thorsteinsson |
I would suggest finding your way to Korea and then fly yourself and your bike to Seattle or Vancouver from there. The roads in Canada and Alaska are fast and paved with little traffic. You are in Alaska in a week.
You can go north through BC and come back to the USA through the Canadian Rockies or vice versa. If you get to Wisconsin in the USA you can stay at my house. Probably I won't be there(traveling myself) but still no problem. I do not lock the doors. Tools in the garage/ride in basement. And maybe my ex-wife. Bill. |
Hello Sverrit!
Are you quite sure about "no flight from Magadan to Alaska"? I planned to leave denmark 11/5/07 heading Magadan - disaster if .... greeting - Poul Randa |
Airline
In the summer of 2006 the airline that flies from Magadan to Anchorage went bust (shut down).
I (and John) ended up flying our bikes south to Vladivostok and then east to LA. There was talk of the flights starting again....phone Igor on +1 907 248 2994 (he works in Anchorage and knows about the flights) very helpful travel agent in magadan http://www.dvs-tour.ru/eng/main.shtml |
RF to US
In mid 1999 we had booked a flight on a tiny Alaskan bi-plane or something from Chukotka to Nome but could not reach Chukotka 'cos of the rouble crisis and no transport. But we improvised and got a flight from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskaya to Anchorage on a small Alaskan jet with fewer passengers than hostesses (post rouble crisis) so we were asked the whole trip if we wanted to eat, drink etc!!! We saw an awful lot of volcanos very close-up! And over-consumed, so it was bad when arriving at Anchorage near midnight to have to eat all our 'expensive' Russian fruit to prevent confiscation!

let me know
love to hear how you get on, I was just about to post the same question but found this thread, will not be arriving in Magadan for awhile though so things could change before then.
cheers Robbo |
Lazer Kid,.. you mentioned a flight from Vladivostock to LA in 2006. We're trying to get from Vlad to USA/Canada (Sept 2008),.. preferably not via Japan or Korea, so if you have any details of that 'route/carrier',.. it would be much appreciated. Cheers,

Flights
The flight i caught was on Korea Air via Seoul - sorry, guess that does not help.
Mark Round The World 2006 |
Cheers Mark,. it does help. The wonders of Horizons Unlimited,... discussing routes from Vladivostick to North America, .. and I only live 10 miles down the road from you in Braintree. RTW, 2008, a pair of Tger 955i's.

route out of Russia
hi sverrirt
From Magadan - extremely difficult (if not impossible?) From Vladivostok - container possible but paperwork and Russian 'processes' will take a long time (potentially weeks) and expensive. From Zarubino - take car ferry to South Korea. 3 times perweek. $250 for bike $250 per person. Then options exist to exit Korea either by air or sea. (Use shipping agent Wendy Choi based in Seoul). This will get you out of Russia with the minimum of hassle. You just turn up at ferry port in Zarubino and the very friendly guys process paperwork etc in couple of hours with no problems whatsoever. I have done this in last couple of months. Phil. |
Vanino cargo port to Anchorage
1 Attachment(s)
Guys,
I will get my W140 S280 merc from Russia to US alaska. It must be possible. I'm just an ordinary Joe with a car and two buddies and a hell of bee in my bonnet to do what everyone says is near impossible. Lookin at shipping in a container from Vanino which is 49.083Lat 140.250Lon, to alaska hopfully Anchorage. My run is for charity so I have a lot of pressure to make it work or come back the way I went and look a chump. Please please guys let me know of all passable dirt gravel roads you know of 500 mile rad of Vanino. I'm is Sheffield England and goin to talk to the head of dept for Russian studies at Sheffield university for pointers and possibly a Russian speaking student who would tag along. I'm prepairing the car for the journey with the help of sponsors Pirrelli, Bilstein, North face, but they want to see some progress with my research. My own money is also being sunk into this run. @ $10,000 plus the car @ $6,000. wife is gonna kill me if journey dont. Check out the car guys it wont look like this soon, roof rack snow tyre jacked suspension spot lights black bonnet, trailer, jerry cans, water tanks, decals, hoist, bull bars, sump guard. No shit if I make it all who help are invited to the bash in Alaska or New York or Sheffield Alabama. please old me to this more pressure the more chance I will do it. Richard |

I know of some guys that drove Goldwings between Vanino and Khabarovsk, so I assume it is possible with a standard passenger car if you go slowly. Is there some reason you are set on going to Vanino? |
Why Vanino
Chris,
I want to drive as much of the distance as I can. Vladivostok is very much the long / longer way around. I'm assuming the possibilty of a cargo ship to Anchorage from Vanino is likely however I am open minded. Is their good container /cargo transport for cars from Vladivostok to Anchorage. |

but Vlad is Russia's major port on the Pacific Ocean. Also, Vlad a day and a half drive almost completely on paved road from Khabarovsk, so it is most likely a shorter drive than to Vanino. From Vladivostok, you can also get to Japan or Korea (if you have a carnet) where you are sure to find cargo transport to the USA. From Vanino, you can also go to Sakhalin island and then on to Japan. But Vlad gives you much more options (even if you have to face more bureaucracy:thumbdown:) The unfortunate fact with international freight is that the closest location is not always the easiest to get to. There is not a whole lot of trade between Alaska and Far East Russia, so there are fewer options as for transport. But if you have the time and will, definately try Vanino and let the rest of us know what you encountered! I don't mean to put you off, I just was letting you know what is possibly (in my opinon) a more feasable route. After all, its YOUR adventure:thumbup1: |
