Mongolian Visa in Ulan Ude
 

Hi Everyone,

I will soon be travelling from Vladivostok to Ulan Ude then into Mongolia. Any current info on getting a Mongolian Visa in Ulan Ude would be appreciated.

I've also read that proof of onward travel may be required, I'm planning a transit visa back through Russia and I don't require a Visa for Kazakhstan (Australian Passport).

Can anyone help with if this is actually needed and if so would a comfirmed Hotel booking in either Russia or Kazakhstan be enough, thanks in advance.

Just use booking.com, get a free cancellation one, and once you have the visa then cancel it.

Got a 30 day tourist visa there in September 2010 (UK passport) and did not need any documentation / tickets. No idea if it's still the same procedure though.

A Friend of me does the Mongolian Visa every year 2-3 times in Ulan Ude
He is Austrian and leaves Mongolia to Russia and comes back in after some days....

Ulan Ude is a surpisingly nice town, don't be afraid to spend a couple days there. Check out a restaurant called. IIRC, Bochka ("barrel"), I enjoyed it. For hotels I like the Baikal Plaza, right across from the giant Lenin head with secure parking.

Does someone know how long is the visa processing time in Ulan-Ude? Just did some calculations and applying for the visa in the closest embassy to me would become very costly. So looking at an alternatives.

Hi Everyone, I posted the original question on this thread and I have just obtained my visa in Ulan Ude yesterday so I thought I would share the experience. When you get to Ulan Ude the Mongolian Consulate is right opposite the Hotel Buryatia on the hill (very good and cheap hotel also) look for the Mongolian flag on the rooftop. Visa times are 10 to 12.30 and 3 to 5. I arrived with a Korean friend at around 10.30 and it was a very simple process.
(Don't forget your Passport and a passport type photo).

You go to a room at the back and fill in a single form back and front, you don't need a host in Mongolia just write a hotel or as I did the Oasis Guesthouse. Stick your passport photo on the form, they supply glue and scissors. You then take it to the cashier just near the entry and pay. Then once paid you take the application form and the receipt back to the original office and hand it to them, they will tell you a time to return depending on if you paid for the urgent approval. Don't do as I did and take the application form away with you.:nono:
I am travelling on an Australian passport and my friend on a Korean one but the process and cost etc were the same. I paid $70 US dollars for an urgent process which takes 2 hours (it took me longer because I took the form when I shouldn't have) this was less than half the price of applying in Australia and a much better turn around time, I had an approved visa in 4.5 hours. My Korean friend paid $25 US for the normal time which is 3 days. As I said it is very easy and the staff are very friendly and helpful.
Ulan Ude is a great town to visit, good chance to recharge and either head to Baikal or Mongolia.

Thanks for such detailed information Paul. Looks like I'm about 2 weeks behind you. I'm in Busan at the moment waiting for my bike to get unloaded. Did you by chance come through Busan also and use Wendy Choi to assist? The only reason I ask is that in a recent email she mentioned helping another Aussie recently named Paul.
Any other advice for me on how it all works from here?

VISA hours: 10:00 - 12:30 and 15:00 to 17:00.
Consulate is closed on Thursdays.

I got my visa today so I thought I'd give an update for future travelers. For the location of the consulate itself check the posts above.

After crossing the gate go to the left, not to the right where the main entrance is. The entrance for visa applications is on the left side. There is a sign that says ВИЗЫ. Enter and then go trough the first door on your left. Give your passport to the clerk behind the counter and he will give you a form to fill out (Mongolian/English). As suggested above, I just wrote Oasis Guesthouse where it says "Place of stay" and left the "Inviting organization" field blank. Fill it out, stick your photo onto the form (as written above, they provide scissors and glue) and hand it back to the clerk. He will ask you whether you want an express (same day = срочный) or normal visa (tomorrow = несрочный). Same day visa goes for 30 US Dollars and express for 70. The clerk will give you a few pieces of paper, take them to the pay office. Leave the room you're in, go straight and and then enter the first door on your right. Pay in cash and sign the blue slip of paper the cute girl behind the counter hands you. She spoke perfect German. KEEP the receipt, you'll need it again when picking up your visa. Go back to the first office. The clerk will tell you when to come back, in may case the next day at 10 AM. The whole process took me less than 30 minutes. Picking up the visa took 3 minutes.

The visa I was given is valid single entry visa valid for 30 days, only usable in the the following three months after application.

I'm traveling on a Swiss passport.
