Route counter-clockwise round the Caspian Sea
Hey all,
I am in the midst of planning a trip from Vietnam to Scotland. I have managed to get as far as Turkmenistan with just the help of some crafty googling and good will of forum members/tourism companies. Around here I hit a snag though, information for going this way round does not seem to be so readily available. Aside from the paperwork, which I'm sure I can figure out eventually myself, I am wondering about the location of border crossings - I like to know exactly where I'm going before I hassle about visas etc. So far I want to go from Tehran to Ashgabat, and bomb through Turkmenistan on a transit visa. What I wonder is if it is possible to enter Kazakhstan near the Caspian Sea (there's a road on gmaps, but it doesn't look like there's a lot there!) and then where the best place to enter Russia is. Any information would be greatly appreciated, as would any general info about the area - this stage of planning is in its infancy! Thanks in advance... Mike |
I do seem to recall someone from HUBB going through that Bekdash border crossing between Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan.
Alternatively, go north from Ashkhabad to Konye Urgench and cross into Uzbekistan, then cross into Kazakhstan near Beyneu. As for KZ to Russia, its a normal asphalt road crossing between the cities of Atyrau and Astrakhan. |
