Selling a UK bike in Mongolia - Any recent experience / information ?

Hey all.

Has anyone got any recent experience or info regarding selling a U.K bike in Mongolia.

Low funds are forcing me into a shorter or nothing situation.

So I'm thinking of buying a £1500 that I can ride to Ulaan Batar there and sell for whatever I can without breaking my heart.

Is it legal ??

klausmong1 14 Nov 2015 17:21

6 Friends of mine did that already.

They drove to UB and sold the bikes there.

Get in Contact with oasis, they know people who will buy your bike and help you with the customs.
You have to pay some tax, but it ist not a fortune.
ANd then you can get out of the country.

Good news. Thanks.

Any chance of me getting more info off your friends ?

Cheers, Ted

I asked them when they came back.
As I told you, they checked everything with Oasis.

And there they found a guy who took care about everything.

I can try to reach them again.
I was in touch with them before and after their trip.
Friends is the wrong word, we met and I gave all the Information about my trip and maps and so on.
And then they asked me If I Know someone.
I gave them a tip with oasis.
And thats what they did.

It was quite easy, they sold the bikes. and went to customs with the buyer, who helped getting the paperwork sorted.

It must have been easy, because they had maybe 2 days before they went home by plane

That's great information. I've shot Oasis an email to ask for some more info too.

Thanks again. :thumbup1:

Bike selling in UB

Process is not too difficult I've bought bikes from travelers and also sold bikes to people coming here wishing to ride back to Eu

Price depends on few factors as always but it's possible

I'm wondering the same.

I'm planning to go from Croatia and arrive next September with two bikes to UB , selling them and continuing by backpacking.
Currently I'm in process of getting the bikes here in Croatia. The problem is, don't know if I should get cheaper Aprilia Pegaso 2002 or more expensive BMW F 650 GS 2002. Which bike would sell easier and for which price approximately?!
I've written to Oasis, no reply so far.. tnx for any info! :mchappy:

The only reason id ride a pegaso is if it was free.

I can't think of a sane reason why anyone would buy one.

Haha
True, resale value is quite low.
But...Pegaso has exactly the same Rotax engine as F 650 GS, has higher clearance, bigger tank and is cheaper. Budget is a big issue for my trip, but if resell is impossible, than, I have to consider alternatives.

Hi Ted,

It would be a great idea if you could pre-plan a sale to another guy in UK, who would ride the bike back to UK, or wherever his heart takes him.

Arrange a meeting in UB, then pass keys over.
Bank transfer could be done, by buyer before flying out from UK.

Leaving you to fly back unimpeded.

Getting all the V5 stuff sorted out with a duplicate V5 wouldn't be that difficult?

Even find some one same size as you, and sell him the ride gear and lid !

Hey guys. In Ulaan Baatar a guy named Chinzorig Chuluunbaatar buys overlander bikes.

He bought two bikes at Oasis Guest House when I was there in May 2016... two Hondas, one from Germany, the other Australia. Both riders had ridden to U.B., wanted to sell, bam done, they were happy with the price paid. You can find him on Facebook under his name. I think he's on HUBB too but not sure.

Enjoy Mongolia, adv moto paradise! :D

Hello all. We just arrived in UB, we are looking for a bike to buy and ride for a month and then sell. Doest need to be anything big, but 250cc at least.

If anyone has any ideas or info would love to hear it! Thanks

I have one in the garage, and two currently in Mongolia. (The Trail model).

Ok, the one in the garage is being stripped for spares as we speak ... We just need to get to Barnaul.

I'd agree, no sane person would buy one of these and ride them through the Americas, round the world and then to Mongolia. :-)

TBH, these are not the right bike for this......

Hi guys! I am planning to travel from Italy to UB with a 17 years old Suzuki tu250x in july/august

Do you think that, if the bike will still be alive after that and if I really will manage to reach UB, there will be some kind of market for that?

I was thinking of travelling through Russia and coming into Mongolia just at the end of the journey ... anyone of you has ever done that and has maybe any idea on how to apply for the visa for Russia without knowing exactly the precise dates of coming and going back? (after selling the bike I was also planning to take the transiberian train till moscow.......)

Thanks guys!
MH

Riding through Russia can be tedious. Only worth doing if you like long straight roads.

If the bike gets to UB, then ride it across. Or enter in the west.

Visa is fine, exact date not 100% problem, it is just a start and finish date.

Of course I will do that!!! :-)

I am just a bit concerned because I don't like the idea of having maybe the go back to Milano on the bike again ihihiihi...

Does anyone know approximately how much could shipping back the bike cost?

Thanks again guys! This forum is really fantastic!!

crisidsto 10 Feb 2018 12:31

Ciao Marta,
If you have double entry visa for Russia (I used russiantour.com in the past in Milan and I was happy with their service) and want to take the transiberian train on the way back, you can think about riding from Italy to Mongolia, then re-enter Russia and put the bike on the train in Irkutsk (there are reports about that on this forum) to Moscow. From there it will be easy to re-enter Europe on your own bike...
ciao
cristiano

PS: remember you also need visa for Mongolia
PPS: if you want to ship the bike from UB back to Europe, you can contact Sambor (advfactory.com), as I think he will offer this service too this season

Grazie mille per le dritte, Cristiano!!
